(2 Customer Reviews)
THE MOTOWN ANTHOLOGY is a generous two-disc roundup of Diana Ross's solo years at Motown, i.e. in the '70s and '90s (the diva spent most of the '80s toiling elsewhere--see GREATEST HITS: THE RCA YEARS). The set's compilers have struck a nice balance between the obvious hits--Ross's initial post-Supremes work including "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," pure pop radio fodder like the "Theme From Mahogany," and disco tracks like "Love Hangover" and the Chic- produced "I'm Coming Out." Along with less-familiar material including several previously unreleased tracks, this makes an interesting package for casual and hardcore Ross fans alike. Most fascinating discovery: An unreleased version of Laura Nyro's "Time and Love," done with Fifth Dimension producer Bones Howe in 5D's style; an obvious hit, it was scuttled by Motown honcho Berry Gordy for reasons known only to him.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Compilation producer: Harry Weinger.
Personnel includes: Diana Ross, Lionel Richie (vocals).
Producers include: Nickolas Ashford, Valerie Simpson, Deke Richards, Hal Davis, Michael Masser.

Diana Ross Motown Anthology Songs Motown Anthology Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) DIANA RULES HER BEST BY FAR Submitted by a reviewer (PHILA, PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Finally!! The long version of "Love Hangover" is back!! What a wonderful compilation title this is. Includes most of her wonderful hits during her solo years at Motown. This even has the long, full version of "Love Hangover" in its 7:48 length. This song was meant to be heard in this length; NOT the single version! So far, this is the only compilation title of Ms. Ross to have the long version of this song, since her unjustly deleted "Greatest Hits" album from 1976, whereas other earlier compilation titles have only the single version of this song. For those of you who have had it with the single version of Love Hangover (I know I have!) and want the long version, LOOK NO FURTHER, this is the compilation title for you to get. Believe me, the single version is NO FUN. Long version is better and deserves to stay. This two CD set also has "Surrender" on it. That is a great song. It is so sad that it was not released on any of Ms. Ross's earlier compilation titles. I strongly believe that the folks at Motown should reissue whatever solo albums of hers that were unjustly deleted on CD years ago REAL SOON. But for now, this will do. Diana Ross would probably be offended by anyone who called her 1980 smash DIANA a comeback, but let's face it--after the flop of THE WIZ and the way that the disco revolution steamrollered so many of her old Motown compatriots' careers, that's exactly what it was. Wisely hooking up with Chic's Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards (both the most ...
