The most pleasant of indie pop diversions, Boycrazy presents a good-natured marriage of crisp boy-girl harmonies, clean guitars, and instantly memorable melodies. Having ties to the Elephant 6 collective, with Bryce Edwards and Rachel Blumberg also being members of the Minders, Boycrazy generally comes across with a much more everyday pop aesthetic, pleasantly free of the more experimental and psychedelic meanderings that could be expected from such an association. While that's not to say that Foreign Words' 12 tracks are marred by a lack of adventurousness, as four-part harmonies, changing time signatures, and various moods are presented, one nevertheless gets the feeling that Boycrazy could have spent just as much time listening to the Vaselines as they have to the Olivia Tremor Control. Finding yet another undeniably infectious way to line up three chords, "Apartments" wastes no time finding its compelling groove, just as the big slinking basslines of "Bad Things" and the crashing drums and chunky guitar twists of "Through the Walls" show a general spirit of uninhibited glee. Never stuck in one gear, the more somber tones of "Plastic Bags" and rising and falling twee pop harmonies of "UFO" establish an impressively varied sound. Those looking for knockout pop with a decidedly sunny disposition need look no further. ~ Matt Fink

Foreign Words album
$9.58 The second Glee soundtrack throws a bone to the show's supporting characters, with Jenna Ushkowitz (the faux-stuttering Tina) singing her first solo and Amber Riley (Mercedes) receiving a larger chunk of airtime. Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison continue to steal the show, though; Morrison delivers one of the album's most inventive songs ...

| | Gov't Mule By A Thread CD (2009)
Foreign Words music CDs
$11.89 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite ...

| | High Treason CD (1970)
Foreign Words songs
$11.59 The original LP release of HIGH TREASON came with a complimentary pack of American Flag rolling paper.
Despite the lip-service paid to bebop and modal jazz -- particularly the playing of legends such as John Coltrane and Miles Davis -- by the late-'60s countercultural scene, few of its rock bands actually attempted to translate the interest into music. The sole album from High Treason, however, was steeped in the genre, thanks in large part to leader and schooled keyboard whiz (check the Bach-like Baroque progressions of "Circadian Rhythm") Edgar Koshatka. High Treason marries extensive jazz interplay with a darkly atmospheric type of rock that took its cues, right down to the shared coed vocals, from the Jefferson Airplane. The music ultimately isn't as accomplished as anything in that band's catalog, but it is for want of distinctive songwriting, not because High Treason lacked the chops or ideas to compete with the top-flight artists of the day. High Treason has musicianship to spare, a profusion of adventuresome moments. But at just six numbers, it is very much an album that puts musical skills before songs. Vocalists Marcie Rauer and Joe Cleary sound much more at ease on the funky country-soul of "Maybe, Maybe," the finest actual ...
| | Djam Karet New Dark Age CD (2001)
Foreign Words album
$15.59 Four years after their last studio album, Djam Karet released New Dark Age in April 2001. In the meantime Cuneiform Records had reissued most of their out-of-print catalog, helping build anticipation. Well, this one was worth waiting for. The quartet (still Gayle Ellett and Mike Henderson on guitars and keyboards, Henry J. Osborne on bass, and Chuck Owen, Jr. on drums) picked up where it left with the 1997 CD The Devouring and beautifully developed its sound, pushing it to another level. Of course the electric guitars remain at the center of the music, but one can hear more Middle Eastern influences, textural acoustic guitar backgrounds, ...
