Stars reveal an obsession with stylish '80s rock on Nightsongs; the most obvious evidence is the band's cover of the Smiths' "This Charming Man." But that doesn't mean the Montréal group's debut sounds like it's from that decade. Drawing equally from new wave and the sophisticated electronic pop of acts such as Saint Etienne and Momus, Stars make every note painfully romantic. Even the vocals make a song about "stars on the ceiling" or words like "motherf*cking" sound innocent and respectable. Several guest musicians and vocalists contribute to Nightsongs (including labelmate Kendall Jane Meade of Mascott), resulting in a chamber pop ensemble comprised of keyboards, horns, and strings. Positively charming. ~ Kenyon Hopkin

Magnet (4-5/01, p.88) - "...Torquil Campbell is like a post-op Tracey Thorn, and his partner Chris Seligman is the brains, wrapping Campbell's lyrics about how he wants to be a dead rock star in lush, electronically aided lifestyle chord figures..." | | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Nightsongs music CDs
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close ...
| | Stars Heart CD (2003) (Import) Canada
Nightsongs songs
$15.85 Though very Momus (whom Stars count as a fan) circa Voyager, Heart is much more twee pop despite similar keyboards and electronics. Stars work with bittersweet grooves, sleepy singing, and analog gurgles -- which makes for a charming collection of electronic chamber pop. More New Order and Saint Etienne than Smiths, and with male and female vocals, the band comes across as an electro-pop Belle & Sebastian. Still, most of the songs lack the immediate hook of their folky counterparts. Stars songs tend to unfold more slowly, from the brilliant retro-futuristic "Death to Death" to the disco-lite Pet Shop Boys-styled "The Vanishing." Amy Millan's gorgeous voice is the group's greatest strength -- on the bouncy, propulsive "Elevator Love Letter," for example. It's not surprising that Millan has contributed to movie soundtracks -- the entire album would sit most comfortably as the decidedly outsider accompaniment to ...

Much of contemporary Christian music these days bears the stamp of its Top 40 counterpart, only with lyrics aimed upward rather than inward. Dan Muckala's Max Martin-like approach to "No Less" and "Serious" on this solid debut is proof of this trend. Ditto Dennis Patton's crazy stuff on "Second Nature." All good songs, but the one drawback to this is that the sonics often get in the way of the CCM singers, who tend to have a little more to offer vocally than Britney Spears. Count the 18-year-old Williams -- almost as cute as Spears, if less obviously so -- as yet another strong, young Amy Grant heir apparent in an increasingly crowded field. Her vocals are strong enough to survive the technical intensity of most of these tunes, which is important because her messages, simple though they are, convey the essence of faith and moral living to young, impressionable listeners. You have to wait until track ten to hear Williams' true plaintive ability to communicate to both her listeners and Jesus. "Do They See Jesus in Me" is a gorgeous ballad that lets us know Williams can easily survive with little more than a piano and a desire to communicate the Gospel. Her handlers would be well-advised to let this shine even brighter in the future. ~ Jonathan Widran

| | Ex Turn CDs (2004)
Nightsongs music CDs
$13.59 Nearly twenty-five years after their inception, these Dutch anarcho-postpunks are still kicking, and 2004's TURN proves that they are still capable of making edgy, urgent, and relevant music. A two-disc set chock full of lengthy epics and oddball, atonal grooves, The Ex create a dense racket with lyrical content that is both inspirational and accusatory. Kat's African-influenced drumming works alongside newcomer Rozemarie's upright ...
