Eastern Star in a Western Sky has just a little more to offer than the 1995 Hot Productions release Blue Eyed Soul, but it is evenly divided between the Western- and Eastern-oriented material and might shortchange those who want to hear two discs of one or the other. The first disc focuses on Biddu's heavily orchestrated disco numbers; none of them have aged particularly well, not helped by the striking resemblance to what you'd hear in an episode of CHiPs or Battle of the Network Stars. It's all properly joyous and well-executed, but it's all significantly watered down in relation to the creative underground smashes of the time and even mainstream hits from Donna Summer or Tavares. The second disc compiles some of Biddu's best work for Indian films, most of which is more melodically developed than the output from his contemporaries. ~ Andy Kellman
Biddu is best known for producing big hits for Tina Charles ('I Love To Love' - No 1), Jimmy James and The Vagabonds ('Now Is The Time' - No 5) and Carl Douglas (Kung Fu Fighting - No 1). This unique double CD, one disc Western songs, one disc Eastern songs (many of which have never appeared on CD before) contains the 3 hits singles, 'Summer of '42' (No15 August 1975), 'Rain Forest' (No 39 April 1976) and 'Journey To The Moon' (No 41 February 1978), making this a must have for both Eastern and Western fans alike.
