| | Jim Beebe Saturday Night Function CD Jim Beebe Discography of CDs
The tracks on SATUDAY NIGHT FUNCTION were originally released on 2 separate LPs.
Recorded in Chicago, Illinois in 1978 and in Schaumburg, Illinois on December 27, 1979. Includes liner notes by Bob Koester.
Although Delmark never got heavily into fusion, it was quite eclectic in the 1970s -- a decade that found the Chicago-based label recording everything form avant-garde AACM jazz to hard bop to Dixieland. One of the Dixieland artists who recorded for Delmark during the latter part of the 1970s was trombonist Jim Beebe, who provided two LPs for the label back then: Saturday Night Function in 1978 and Cornet Chop Suey in 1979. Both albums were reissued in 2001, when Delmark combined them on this generous CD. Born in 1931, Beebe was in his late forties when these recordings were made -- he was about the same age as a lot of bop musicians. But you won't hear a trace of J.J. Johnson, Curtis Fuller, or Kai Winding in his playing. Beebe has more in common with Kid Ory or Jack Teagarden, and a 1920s-like mindset prevails on spirited performances of "Indiana," "Struttin' With Some Barbecue," and "Limehouse Blues" -- in other words, the usual Dixieland/classic jazz repertoire. The trombonist and his sidemen (who include trumpeter Spanky Davis in 1978 and drummer Barrett Deems in both 1978 and 1979) don't offer a lot of surprises, but what they lack in ambition they make up for in enthusiasm on this generally enjoyable release, if reissue. ~ Alex Henderson
Trombonist Beebe recorded 2 swinging LPs for Delmark in the late 1970s which have been combined here onto one CD. At the time of this recording, Beebe's Chicago Jazz had been ensconced for 2 years at Flaming Sally's in Chicago's Blackstone Hotel. That th

Saturday Night Function album
$10.79 This is an expanded edition of THE FANTASTIC JIMMY SMITH, originally released on the Upfront label in the early 60's.
Recorded between 1953 & 1955. Includes liner notes by Larry Hollis.
When Jimmy Smith burst on the scene in 1955, playing his exciting brand of jazz organ at the Café Bohemia and the following year on records for Blue Note, he seemed to appear fully formed from out of nowhere. In the early '60s, a budget LP from the Up Front label had ten obscure selections from the beginning of Smith's career, but failed to give any real information. Now those ten numbers plus six other cuts have been reissued on this historic CD. Recorded most likely during 1953-1954, the performances on this disc comprise Jimmy Smith's earliest recording sessions. Smith is generally joined by tenor saxophonist Al Cass (some numbers have an altoist who might also be Cass), an unknown guitarist (possibly Thornel Schwartz), and drummer/singer Don Gardner, who was actually the ...
