Released in late 2000, Parabolic Versions collects previously released songs by Hugh Hopper plus four tracks never heard before. With the critical praise surrounding recent Hopper albums like Hughscore's Delta Flora and the Hopper/Lisa S. Klossner duo's Different and Cryptids, one can understand why Voiceprint gathered more songs from the same source. The first eight tracks are taken from the mid-'90s releases Somewhere in France, Hooligan Romantics, and Hugh Hopper and Odd Friends. These feature Richard Sinclair, John Atkins, and Mike Travis on vocals. The next three pieces are unreleased material with Klossner and the last one is the first version of "Was a Friend" with Robert Wyatt (different from the one found on his CD Shleep). "C'Est Grace" uses the same musical accompaniment with completely different lyrics and melody by Atkins. The album's best moments include "Long Lingers Autumn Time," "The Moon in a Bottle," and "The Painter's Birthday," but by no means should Parabolic Versions be considered an essential Hopper CD. Driven by a cheap drum machine, tracks like "Indeterminacy" and "Iron Lady" (yes, on Margaret Thatcher's regime) have aged poorly. The composer's typical dark and dreamy mood is present on most songs, hesitating between uncertain nightmare and melancholia, and fans and collectors will find this collection of interest. With ALL IN ONE, Bebel Gilberto made her home at Verve, which is not just an auspicious label for music but also the home of some of the best Brazilian records of all time--by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto (who is no relation, although she was married to Bebel's father before Bebel's birth), Stan Getz, and, of course, her father, Joao Gilberto. It's obvious Gilberto is well aware of this: the cover is reminiscent of an Astrud Gilberto album and she sings a version of "Bim Bom," which was written by her father and is known popularly for Astrud's version (what's more, it features the piano work of Brazilian royalty Dan Jobim). Still, it's clear Bebel Gilberto knows where to draw the line, and ALL IN ONE is defined more by her songs and her collaborators than the weight of Brazilian musical history that she must carry. Multi-percussionist Carlinhos Brown gets the most instrument credits (his kit bag must weigh a ton), and his string of percussion instruments brings a rich texture to every song he graces. (He also co-wrote the best new songs, "Nossa Senhora" and "Ela [On My Way].") Also appearing is superstar producer Mark Ronson for the single "The Real Thing," a song whose history hits a sweet spot here--Stevie Wonder originally wrote it in the late '70s for Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77. Ronson takes the song back to Wonder's Motown roots, also quoting from Saint Etienne's vibrant update of classic soul production. Drummer Joe Ascione's love for drummer Buddy Rich is no secret as he goes to town with the 12 tracks on this CD. He fronts an octet through these standards like a hot knife through butter, and the group could not be more en fuego. Veterans Randy Sandke, trumpet, Dan Barrett, trombone, the legendary tenor saxophonist Billy Mitchell, Bob Haggart, bass (since passed on) join multi-instrumentalist Brian Ogilvie, pianist Mark Shane, and guitarist James Chirillo for a hard driving, soulfully swinging tribute to Rich. Throughout the date, Ascione, 35 at the time of this recording, acquits himself well. He's not as brash as Rich (who could be?) but pushes the band without being pushy. Everyone in the combo contributes arrangements, most noticeable is Barrett's bouncy, sprightly "Limehouse Blues," ultra cool "Soft Winds," and Ogilvie's uppity chart on "I Want to Be Happy" where he takes an extroverted alto sax lead. Sandke's duet with Ascione on "Nica's Dream" is quite stripped down and daring, and the 14:19 "Blues #5 (Blues for Kurtchen)" is a downtrodden finale where everyone in the band gets blue for Rich. Mitchell's feature on "J & B's Bag" is the CD's highlight, and it's great to hear this icon still very much in the game, his original, bluesy legato sound intact and vibrant. Rich was short and snappy, and so are these tunes for the most part. At times you think their lamps are trimmed and burning, as if there's a prescribed cut-off point. There's a variance in tempo from up to down and back up, an interesting contrast in a tribute to a person who was generally pretty fiery.
