Jalan Jalan is an experimental New Age/world fusion outfit from Japan. Listeners familiar with the group's beautiful debut BALI will find much to appreciate on BALI DUA, which arguably improves on its predecessor. Like BALI, BALI DUA uses Indonesian gamelan music as its foundation, sampling the traditional instruments (along with various chimes and gongs) to evoke breezy, paradisiacal visions of Bali.
Behind, in, and around these samples, however, Jalan Jalan employ keys and electronic textures to generate wide, symphonic swaths of atmosphere that push the gamelan elements into the stratosphere. The resulting mix is intoxicating, bringing together ambient, electronica, world music, and minimal composition for an overall effect that is perfectly suited to meditation, relaxation, yogic practices, and headphone immersion.

Bali Dua album
$14.15 The stunning debut by Japanese ensemble Jalan Jalan evokes the island of Bali via authentic instrumentation, moving melodies, artfully arranged ambience, and stylish flourishes. Balinese gamelan is at the center of the music: with gongs, the gender (the metal keyboard used in gamelan), bamboo flutes, and percussion, making BALI feel particularly rooted in ...
| | Jia Peng Fang Rainbow CD (2000)
Bali Dua CD music
$14.79 Much like his previous release on Pacific Moon Records, River, Rainbow is a delicate, emotive collection of songs which combine traditional Chinese instrumentation with ambient instrumentation. Fang plays the niko, a stringed instrument which mimics the sound of the human voice, and the clarity of that sound lends much to the spiritual tone of this album. Evoking the open spaces and peaceful beauty of the wilderness in springtime, Fang creates a series of melodies where the silence between the sounds is as important as the notes themselves. A gentle and soothing recording, Rainbow will delight fans of new age and Asian music alike. ~ Stacia Proefrock

PLAINS was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best New Age Album.
A distinctly American sensibility comes shining through the august soundscapes of master new-age pianist George Winston. This is not too surprising. In addition to his generous catalog of releases for Windham Hill, Winston has also written the soundtracks to a Charlie Brown film on the Constitution and released albums on the Informed Democracy label.
PLAINS makes clear, however, that there are some dark, occasionally unsettling undertones to Winston's aesthetic. Such shadows belie the notion that new age is a genre without a sinister side. For one thing, Winston is not afraid to drift into angular, Thelonious Monk-like playing, as he does on a reading of Angelo Badalamenti's "The Swan." Despite the familiar rolling rushes of melody that introduce the album-opening "Dubuque," calling to mind, as they always do, Civil War documentaries and pre-game baseball tributes, Winston ...

Bali Dua songs
$8.69 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
The Dire Straits' mastermind's first non-soundtrack solo album is a refreshingly diverse outing. Mellower overall than his previous fare, there's still plenty of stunning guitar work and solid songcrafting to be had here. The songs cover a lot of stylistic bases, from rock to folk, Celtic, blues and somber balladeering. The disc is full, yet its diversity never becomes superfluous. A well-planned and pleasing slice of craftsmanship from one of rock's reigning originals.
Recorded in Nashville, Tennessee; London, England; Dublin, Ireland.

Bali Dua music CDs
$12.19 Although capable of making fascinating tracks, the British trio Fridge seemingly can't bother tempering its experimental inclinations enough to make a solid, enjoyable full-length. Slightly more difficult than 1999's EPH, Happiness presents nine tracks of alternately beautiful, alternately boring sound experiments disguised as songs. Titles like "Melodica and Trombone" and "Tone Guitar and Drum ...
