While many Native American recordings evoke a timeless, unchanged culture, the work of Robert Mirabal consistently stresses the ways in which the original aboriginal culture has come into contact with other forces. His music draws upon folk, rock, and hip-hop styles, and he sings in English rather than a tribal language. As someone who grew up on a Taos reservation, rather than, say, in Europe, Mirabal has witnessed firsthand the strength and despair that characterize Native American life, and, rather than romanticize this life, he paints it in its full complexity.

MUSIC FROM A PAINTED CAVE is the companion piece to the highly-acclaimed PBS TV special of the same name which chronicled Mirabal's live concert. "Painted Caves" is a sublime, subdued piece that opens with a Native American flute passage before giving way to a cello and acoustic guitar duet, while "1000 Miles" and "Hope" showcase the explosive power of Mirabal's backing band, the Rare Tribal Mob.
