| | Kenny Dorham Whistle Stop CD (1961) Remastered
Jazz After Hours
$8.99 This is part of Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur series.
Kenny Dorham's best Blue Note date, and arguably the best of his career, is the exceptional WHISTLE STOP. Although he never received the same recognition as trumpeters like Miles Davis or Lee Morgan, Dorham was a stellar talent. This session crystallizes all of Dorham's skill as a soloist, leader, and composer, as all selections are originals. The trumpeter's frequent partner Joe Henderson is replaced here with the equally talented Hank Mobley along with pianist Kenny Drew and the legendary rhythm team of Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. These ingredients form a magical combination that defines the golden age of hard bop.
The group blows strong from the outset with the bluesy "Philly Twist," a tribute to and feature for the legendary drummer. Dorham reflects many influences in his writing and playing, from the hushed rhumba of "Sunset," to the bebop-flavored title track. His penchant for elaborate arrangements is ...
| | Lee Morgan Cornbread CD (1965)
Jazz After Hours
$8.85 CORNBREAD offers a typical mid-'60s Morgan set of four originals and a standard. "Most Like Lee" is a straight-ahead minor blues swinger, while the title cut is a swaggering 20-bar blues workout for the three horns that owes as much to Horace Silver's down-home gospel-inflected composing as it does to tunes like Morgan's own hit "The Sidewinder." Altoist Jackie McLean lays out for "Ceora," a bossa nova with a bop-inflected melody and a beautifully stealthy set of changes. "Our Man Higgins" is, not surprisingly, a drum feature for Billy Higgins that splits the difference between modal blowing and the blues when it comes to the solos.
The band's ...

| | Is It Rolling Bob? Dub Versions: Visions Of Jamaica CD (2005)
Jazz After Hours
$10.15 Bob Dylan has long been held in high regard in Jamaica, and although his influence isn't front and center in reggae or dancehall, it is easy to see the political and compositional lessons that artists like Bob Marley drew from Dylan, and if you lean in closely, you'll realize it's a much shorter drive from the rhythmic structure of "Subterranean Homesick Blues" to contemporary Jamaican dancehall than one might first assume. This collection was originally the dub half (the first half consisted of straight vocal versions) of a two-disc Jamaican tribute to Dylan released in 2004, most of which was recorded in early June, 2003, at Anchor Studios in Kingston (additional vocal work was done at Harmony House in Kingston, Ariwa Studios in London, and at Lion & Fox Studio in Washington, D.C.). Truthfully, although these dub mixes are certainly jarring and interesting, in the end they are really more odd than anything else, and after the initial shock of hearing Dylan lyrics drift into focus and then echo off into the sonic ether, these mixes tend to draw on the stock tricks of the dub trade, rendering them fairly clichéd. The one exception is Toots Hibbert's version of "Maggie's Farm" which, after being fed into the dub blender, comes out sounding like the frenzied confession of a field hand gone crazy and speaking in tongues while leading a spooky gospel choir through a battle hymn. Or something like that. The track here that will ultimately draw the most attention is the dub mix of "I and I," which was mixed from the original tapes for Dylan's Infidels album, and thus features the guitars of Mark Knopfler and Mick Taylor, a rhythm section of Sly & Robbie, and the voice of Dylan himself, all echoing into infinity. It's certainly interesting, worth hearing, and memorable, but when all is said and done, the dub mix of "I and I" ends up being mostly ...
| | John Stein Concerto Internacional De Jazz CD (2006)
Jazz After Hours
$13.25 Jazz guitarist John Stein may have recruited a group of Brazilian musicians for this recording session, but it is hardly an album of what one would expect. Starting off with "Happy Hour," a funky New Orleans-flavored original that would get anyone dancing, it is obvious that the musicians are having a blast. Grant Green's subtle "Blues in Maude's Flat" is a feature for the leader with bassist Frank Herzberg and ...
