Claude Bolling is a classical pianist who demonstrated an affinity for jazz with numerous recordings in crossover settings. But this 1972 session recorded for Phillips is strictly a solo piano affair in which Bolling salutes the greats of jazz piano, including Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Thelonious Monk, Willie "The Lion" Smith, Jelly Roll Morton, Earl Hines, Erroll Garner, and Horace Silver. He primarily sticks to a stride piano setting, which gives a whole new flavor to Silver's "The Preacher," while his interpretations of the works of stride pianists like Smith are technically polished but seem just a tad mechanical, lacking a true improviser's touch. Likewise, Bolling's rendition of Monk's "'Round About Midnight" is a bit overly dramatic, with occasionally excessive use of the sustain pedal that muddies the sound. If the intent of this CD is to get classical listeners to check out the original recordings of these jazz giants, it is a resounding success. But those familiar with the recordings by each artist represented in this collection may be a bit disappointed with this tribute. ~ Ken Dryden Plays The Original Piano Greats Music Claude Bolling Plays The Original Piano Greats Songs Plays The Original Piano Greats Review

| | Unique Thelonious Monk CD (1956)
Plays The Original Piano Greats
$8.75 In an effort to force the musical mainstream to reasses Thelonious Monk, Riverside producer Orrin Keepnews asked the pianist to record an album of familiar American standards. Much to Riverside's surprise, many of the same critics who'd previously dismissed Monk's music for being too abstract now criticized his new label for putting him in a creative straitjacket. However, with the benefit of hindsight, we can hear clearly the pianist's roots in the Tin Pan Alley tradition throughout THE UNIQUE THELONIOUS MONK.
Monk begins with a hard-swinging rendition of Gershwin's "Liza," introducing some subtle rhythmic variations on the theme and a touch of boogie woogie in the bridge. The pianist's rolling lines and jagged punctuations culminate in a rollicking two-handed assault; although he pulls back in the second chorus to showcase Oscar Pettiford's irrepresibly melodic bass lines, as he and Art Blakey engage in some airborne morse code. After the drummer's thrilling exposition, ...

| | Quincy Jones' Finest Hour CD (2000)
Plays The Original Piano Greats
$9.89 Recorded between 1956 and 1978. Includes liner notes by Michael Ullman.
Digitally remastered by Jeff Willens (Universal Mastering Studios-East).
Part of Verve's FINEST HOUR reissue campaign, this 2000 compilation covers some of the same material as previous Verve reissues like COMPACT JAZZ and JAZZ ROUND MIDNIGHT, but it also focuses on an under-explored area of Jones's long and varied career, his '60s soundtrack work. Jones's '60s material got an unexpected boost in 1996, when Mike Myers's AUSTIN POWERS: INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY used Jones' "Soul Bossa Nova," an insistently catchy cross between Cannonball Adderley and Martin Denny, as its theme, but Jones was not just a composer of memorable novelties. His theme for the lacerating Rod Steiger drama THE PAWNBROKER is a dark-hued, moody gem, for example. Of the more familiar tracks, Jones's classic big band treatment of Bobby Timmon's "Moanin'" and the Sarah Vaughan vocal version of "That Midnight Sun Will Never Set" are the highlights. Longtime fans will have heard most of this stuff before, but for once, the title of the collection is not far from the truth.
This is part of the Verve Finest Hour series.

Plays The Original Piano Greats
$13.85 On this unusual album, 75-year-old trumpeter Kenny Wheeler performs eight of his originals with the Hugo Wolf String Quartet and pianist John Taylor. Two of the eight songs feature the strings by themselves. Wheeler is one of the most brilliant and inventive trumpeters of the past 40 years, and also a creative writer. However Other People has one main fault: a lack of much mood variation. Nearly all of the pieces are taken at ballad tempos (surprisingly, one of the few exceptions focuses on the strings without Wheeler) and the ...
