| One of the Best Science Fiction Films of All Time "2001: A Space Odyssey" is one of the very few science fiction films that does not disappoint. 2001: A Space Odyssey movie While film's story line does deviate slightly from that of the novel (in the book, the Discovery made a fly-by of Jupiter before finally arriving at Saturn, where the second monolith was located), the film is extremely well made. The story itself about the evolution of man is riveting, the performances are excellent, and the visuals are unforgettable. And, this film was one of the few science fiction films that did not take any significant artistic license with the science behind space travel. While more recent science fiction films feature the sounds of exploding spacecraft, etc. ; "2001" realistically depicted the silence, isolation, and helplessness of modern space flight. In an era where audiences expect the excitement of explosions and fast paced action, it is unlikely a film as unique and realistic as "2001" will ever be made again. This one is well worth adding to anyone's collection. By a reviewer (Beresford, SD, USA) |
| Has it been 34 years, already?? 2001: A Space Odyssey video This movie had such an impact on me, that it seems as though it was only yeaterday that I saw it at the Century 21 Theatre, in San Jose California. I have copies on VHS, DVD and LaserDisc. I had the wonderful sound track on vinyl. I'm going to have to check the availability on CD. By the way, this movie is a classic and is well worth the money. Long ago, I heard that the computers' name "Hal" was made-up by an IBM computer... by backing-up the letters I-B-M one space to H-A-L. | Top 100????? I am on a quest to watch the AFI top 100 movies, and 2001: A Space Odyssey is on that list. Why?!? This was one of the worst movies I have ever seen: Boring, too long, not enough character development, no real plot, and no meaning. The only good quality to this movie is the cinimatography. I want those 2 1/2 hours back... .... By Miriam (Jackson, MS) |
