500 Miles High CD music
$9.59 Although the most popular contemporary jazz tends to fall into the "lite" category, trumpeter Chris Botti avoids painting himself into this corner by sticking with an approach more reminiscent of Chet Baker. For his 2004 album, WHEN I FALL IN LOVE, Botti takes it a step further by employing the London Session Orchestra to provide him with lush accompaniment on a program predominantly made up of standards. The Oregon native adds further layers to the album's sound by calling on singer Paula Cole, whose burnished vocals provide a fine foil on a brush-stroked version of Irving Berlin's "What'll I Do?" and "How Love Should Be," with its subtle mix of piano and strings.
Along with exquisite takes on Rodgers & Hart ("My Romance") and the Gershwins ("Someone to Watch Over Me"), Botti also shows a knack for the cinematic nuance of Ennio Morricone ("Cinema Paradiso") and the pop-jazz of Sade ("No Ordinary Love"). The handsome horn player ...

When alto saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, a high school band director from Florida, passed through New York with brother Nat during a school break, he found more excitement than he was counting on. After Julian offered to sit in for a late reedman, the session's leader, bassist Oscar Pettiford confronted him with the challenging changes of "I'll Remember April," at a breakneck tempo designed to humiliate the young upstart. Instead, Adderley responded with a solo that became ...

500 Miles High CD music
$14.95 Many people think of smooth jazz as something that didn't start until the 1980s, but arguably, smooth jazz started around 1966-1968 with the overtly commercial, pop-drenched albums that guitarist Wes Montgomery recorded during the last few years of his life. Love it or hate it, Montgomery's more commercial output had a major impact on Peter White and many other guitarists who have contributed to smooth jazz (including George Benson, Lee Ritenour, Earl Klugh, Chuck Loeb, and Henry Johnson). Musically, a lot has changed since the '60s, but the more things change in music, the more they inevitably stay the same -- and 2009 found White (like Montgomery 41, 42, and 43 years earlier) still struggling with a desire to improvise and a desire for mass acceptance (the thing that jazz, for the most part, lost after World War II). Of course, one doesn't necessarily rule out the another; the late saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr. knew how to be commercial and adventurous at the same time, but most smooth jazz artists play it way too ...

| | Roy Ayers Sunshine Man CD (2005) (Import) Australia
500 Miles High album
$14.79 In the liner notes for Sunshine Man, Roy Ayers is exalted as "The Father of Neo-Soul." But it's important to remember that Ayers was making his mark in R&B long before the rise of artists who gave listeners a hip-hop-influenced, post-'70s vision of soul music (such as Keith Sweat and Alexander O'Neal in the '80s or D'Angelo in the '90s). Ayers became a soul-funk star back when the R&B charts were still called the soul charts and soul in the pre-'80s sense was still in vogue. Nonetheless, "The Father of Neo-Soul" isn't a totally inaccurate way to describe Ayers, because the singer/vibist influenced many of today's neo-soul stars (including Erykah Badu, India Arie, and Jill Scott). This Australian release finds Ayers revisiting some of the soul, funk, and crossover jazz ...
