Sir Mix-A-Lot/R.Kelly/Salt & Pepa/2live Crew/Bell Biv Devoe
Compilation producers: MC Bob Wingo, Dr. Schmoo. Digitally remastered by Elliott Federman (SAJE Sound, New York, New York). Razor & Tie's TV-marketed Monster Booty collects a generous number of party rap tracks that dominated dance clubs and (especially) meat-market pickup bars from coast to coast during the '90s. Not everything here fits neatly into the Miami-centered bass-music sound that's become more commonly known as booty, but the tracks at least fit the spirit (and anatomical obsession) of the collection, which is jam-packed with incessantly catchy, party-hearty dancefloor anthems. A few genre-defining cuts are missing -- the 69 Boyz' "Tootsee Roll," Quad City DJs' "C'Mon N' Ride It (The Train)," DJ Kool's "Let Me Clear My Throat" -- but Monster Booty does feature 2 Live Crew's "Me So Horny," Tag Team's "Whoomp! There It Is," Freak Nasty's "Da Dip," Duice's "Dazzey Duks," Reel to Real's "I Like to Move It," and the Outhere Brothers' "Boom Boom Boom." Plus, there are great singles by R. Kelly ("Bump N' Grind"), Sir Mix-a-Lot ("Baby Got Back"), Bell Biv DeVoe ("Do Me!"), and Wreckx-N-Effect ("Rump Shaker"), among others. ~ Steve Huey The Razor & Tie label began as a respectably hip endeavor specializing in cult artists, but with the release of compilations like this one, they've clearly gone the prurient-interest route. Nevertheless, if there has to be a concept album about the butt, it should at least be done well, which the appropriately titled MONSTER BOOTY is. The disc kicks off with the national anthem of "butt" songs, Sir-Mix-A-Lot's hip-hop ode to the rump, "Baby Got Back." From there, things continue apace, with the infectious chanting of Tag Team's "Whoomp! (There it Is)," Reel to Real's shake-your-groove-thang dance number "I Like to Move It" and more. The collection concludes with E.U.'s tried-and-true go-go classic "Da Butt," which promotes booty-watching as a preoccupation of near-transcendent qualities. If you can't bump and grind to MONSTER BOOTY you might need to consult a physician, because something's not working back there.

Although the duo tries very hard, there isn't much on Hold It Down, Das EFX's third album, that makes it very different from their previous records. The production is a bit leaner and their delivery is a bit harder, yet that doesn't disguise the fact that the beats aren't as strong as their earlier albums, nor are their raps as exciting and inventive. Nevertheless, there are some strong moments on Hold It Down, and it should please fans of the duo, even if it doesn't appeal to the same large ...

$9.99 Feat:Frankie Beverly. Incl. Capitol & Warner Bros.Hits.
Liner Note Author: Gail Mitchell. Along with a number of very welcome Maze album reissues, in 2004 The Right Stuff compiled what is no doubt the definitive single-disc collection of the Frankie Beverly-led band, titled simply yet accurately Greatest Hits. The 18-track compilation rounds up the four-minute single edits of such hits as "Southern Girl," "Joy and Pain," "Before I Let Go," "Never Let You Down," and "Back in Stride," among numerous others. Because many of these songs in their original states clock around seven or so minutes apiece, these single edits are preferable for a compilation such as this. This way you get as many hits as possible on the disc, and if you indeed ...
