Turntable-less fans of Washington, D.C.-based garage rockers the Rondelles should flock to their neighborhood record stores as soon as possible to snatch up the wholly enjoyable Shined Nickels and Loose Change. As an excellent odds and ends collection of vinyl-only songs, compilation tracks, and new recordings that span nearly the band's entire existence, the 14-song compilation is a must-have for new and old fans alike. Opening with their wonderfully infectious Teenbeat single (featuring "Safety in Numbers" and "Strike-Out," two of their best songs), Shined Nickels doesn't lose any of its steam until the previously unreleased closing tracks, which hint at a future of less straightforward and more experimental pop for the band. Aside from three vinyl singles (the Teenbeat single plus two on K Records), the compilation also includes a sped-up cover of Madonna's "Like a Prayer" and the band's take on the Shimmy Beckers' "Cafeteria Rock," as well as the title track to their second full-length, The Fox. Not just a collection of rarities for die-hard fans, Shined Nickels has enough pop perfection for everyone. ~ Jimmy Draper
The Rondelles: Juliet Swango (vocals, guitar); Yukiko Moynihan (vocals, bass); Cory Shane (guitar); Dakley Munson (mino organ, drums).

| | Exploding Hearts Guitar Romantic CD (2003)
Shined Nickels And Loose Change CD music
$9.85 At first glance, the Exploding Hearts seem like mere revivalists. From the pink and yellow cover to their 1977 looks to their influences, it would be easy to dismiss them. But you need to hold the phone a minute and listen, because the Exploding Hearts are the best punk band to come along in a long time, maybe since the original wave. About those influences, here is a partial list: the early Clash if Mick Jones wrote all the songs and the Only Ones or Buzzcocks at their emotional best, but also classic power pop sounds like a (much) tougher Rubinoos, rock & roll like a tighter and sober New York Dolls, and the lo-fi approach of Billy Childish. Guitar Romantic is an amazingly raw and melodic debut, fully realized and original despite the obvious debt to the punk past. It is difficult to pinpoint just what it is about the band that helps overcome their idol worship. Maybe it is the love and authenticity that they pour into the worship, the raw production that smashes the guitars and bass into a whirling mess of tuneful noise, or the wonderfully tough but tender vocals. Most likely it is the songwriting. Too many bands that seek to re-create a sound or an era don't ...

| | Tom Waits Glitter And Doom Live CDs (2009) Digipak
Shined Nickels And Loose Change CD music
$13.84 Glitter and Doom Live, a double-disc set, marks Tom Waits' third live effort in his nearly 40-year career, each one summing up his career to the point of its release. The first, Nighthawks at the Diner issued in 1975 on Asylum, is regarded by many as one of the greatest live albums of all time. The second was Big Time, released during his tenure at Island in 1986. The musical performances on disc one of Glitter and Doom Live were culled from Waits' historic sold-out tour of the U.S. and Europe. He compiled and sequenced the set himself, intending to make them sound like a single show. The material leans, understandably, ...

| | Souther-Hillman-Furay Band Trouble In Paradise CD (1975) Souther Hillman Furay Band
Shined Nickels And Loose Change album
$9.69 With producer Tom Dowd, known for his work at Atlantic Records, at the helm, the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band seemed to be distancing itself a bit from its country-rock roots with its second release, the appropriately titled Trouble in Paradise. Here the band expands on the funkier aspects of its debut album, while at the same time slipping even closer to the middle of the road. On that record it was former Poco frontman Richie Furay who was responsible for the highlights, but this time out it's J.D. Souther, who penned four of the LP's nine tracks, who leads the way, with "Prisoner in Disguise" (recorded that same year by Linda Ronstadt) and the title cut the standouts. Still, Furay, whose two compositions were dominated by his recent conversion to Christianity, does connect with the lovely "For Someone I Love," which interestingly enough precedes the sleazy rationalizations of Souther's "Mexico." As was the case with the previous album, Chris Hillman's ...
