| | Cindy Blackman Someday... CD Cindy Blackman Discography of CDs
Cindy Blackman has led a long series of mostly acoustic jazz dates for the Muse and High Note labels. This particular set features her working group of 2000, a quartet with tenor saxophonist J.D. Allen, keyboardist Carlton Holmes, and bassist George Mitchell. Most intriguing are inventive reworkings of such veteran standards as "My Funny Valentine" (which is given a mildly disturbing mood), "Someday My Prince Will Come" (which is no-nonsense rather than being sweetly sentimental), and "Walkin'," which is taken much slower than usual. Together this trio of songs is a tribute of sorts to Miles Davis. The other pieces are group originals, including five by the drummer/leader (two of which are brief drum solos). These are post-bop explorations, often rather dark in mood and giving all four musicians opportunities to set the direction and to interact with each other. The result is an album of high-quality modern jazz. ~ Scott Yanow

Someday... CD music
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known ...

Someday... music CDs
$13.79 24 tracks feat. Adrian Rollini, Red Nichols, Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey + 1 never before released take
There were two distinctly different ensembles that recorded under the name of the Little Ramblers. One was an often racially integrated swing band that came out with about 20 sides on Victor's Bluebird subsidiary during the mid-'30s. The original Little Ramblers, and the subject of a Timeless CD compilation released in 1997, were a hot jazz and dance band that recorded for Columbia during the mid-'20s, while making scads of records for numerous other labels under various names, the most famous being the California Ramblers. The folks at Timeless eliminated the Little Ramblers' first four recordings, beginning the chronology with the session of September 18, 1924. "Deep Blue Sea Blues" was based upon the melody "Asleep in the Deep," an elegy for drowned sailors published in 1897. Beginning with "Those Panama Mamas," Adrian Rollini added the bass saxophone to his arsenal of uncommon instruments; the two preceding titles have him using the kazoo and the goofus, ...

Someday... music CDs
$11.49 Nels Cline, Andrea Parkins, and Tom Rainey can play anything from fiendishly complex charts to being consummate improvisers, and it's the latter end of that spectrum that's on display on the appropriately titled Out Trios, Vol. 3. The seven freely improvised tracks don't approach anything resembling a groove until the end of the disc, but clearly demonstrate what excellent players and listeners they all are. Cline's mastery of guitar and effects and Parkins' sampling abilities mean there are going to be some wild tones conjured up, and sometimes it's hard to tell who's doing what between them (is Andrea sampling Nels?). ...
