(1 Customer Review)
Something rare in jazz, Conjunction is billed to a rhythm section: drummer Mike Clark, bassist Paul Jackson, and vibraphonist Marc Wagnon, although the latter gets a leading role in this outfit, thanks to his great technique and his use of MIDI vibes to expand the soloing range of his instrument. This trio is completed by four guest musicians: guitarist extraordinaire David "Fuze" Fiuczynski, tenor sax Jed Levy, trombonist Josh Roseman, and reedist Chris Speed. This impressive lineup can be reduced to a quartet ("Horta-Culture") and go up to a sextet (on five tracks). If one takes out the post-bop ballad "Horta-Culture," the music on this CD lies somewhere between Pierre Moerlen's Gong and the Chick Corea Elektric Band, although funkier than any of them. "East West" and "Conjunction" provide the most satisfactory moments: a driving rhythm section, hot brass licks, and nice guitar. Fiuczynski sounds shy on this album; his work remains rather uninvolved, a feeling reinforced by the fact that his guitar is kept low in the mix. Otherwise, Conjunction makes an enjoyable album both for casual listening and for close-up inspection (you can spend hours studying Wagnon's intricate patterns). Not best-of-the-year material, but a job well done. ~ François Couture
Herbie Hancock's "Headhunters" rhythm section, drummer Mike Clark & bassist Paul Jackson, team up with Brand X & Tunnels electronic vibist Marc Wagnon to form "Conjunction." Add Dave Fiuczynski on guitar, Chris Speed & Jed Levy on reeds, and Josh Roseman

Conjunction music CDs
$13.15 Mon Frere's volatile mix of post-new wave dance-punk and electro '70s-infused power pop falls somewhere between Green Day, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and the Scissor Sisters, with a healthy love of the Damned. The West Coast trio is singularly obsessed with vampires, lycanthropy, and the broken, bleeding hearts of doomed teenagers. As bleak as that sounds, they have a lot more in common with the Cars than they do the Cure, and their full-length debut for Cake Records is both fun and brooding, exuding a wicked late-night energy that conjures up images of Lost Boys-era Los Angeles. Vocalist/keyboard player Nouela Johnston screams with the best of them, but she can vamp it up as well, lending her pained, Gwen Stefani-meets-Björk pipes to midtempo wind-downs like the smoky "Leaving Town" and the full-on lighter-in-the-air closer, "Harsh Winds." Blood, Sweat, and Swords is at heart a fun collection of horror-punk, and like the best of its genre (Misfits, Cramps, Siouxsie Sioux), it doesn't get too caught up in itself. ~ James Christopher Monger
Featuring Nouela Johnston of Say Hi (To Your Mom) and People Eating People!Mon Frere's dance rock comes off like a musical graphic novel; futuristically poppy and full of brash punk energy, mixing dance, heavy rock and jazz into something else. Formed in a subdivision basement by a trio of high-school outcasts, Mon Frere is the kind of band that makes kids clap-their-hands-say-yah and parents scratch their heads. Mon Frere stunned the Seattle music scene in 2005, spewing forth from the suburban lawns of Mountlake Terrace, WA, and transforming from underage unknowns to one of the scene's most exciting draws. Thanks to tastemakers like KEXP DJ John Richards and a rapidly growing fanbase, Mon Frere gained entrance to the hallowed halls of the Northwest's legendary rock clubs, capping their first year as a band with a packed show at Bumbershoot, the Nation's largest annual music festival, and shows with Vendetta Red, Minus The Bear, The Gossip, U.S.E., and Visqueen, to name a few. Mon Frere's quirky-yet-dark pop sensibility permeates their sound. Frontwoman Nouela Johnston's voice is both buttery and brutal, able to mowing down an advancing army or seduce a ghost. Her playfully fractured synths run circles around Kyle Swisher's fuzzy, dinosaur-sized guitar riffs. Drummer Dustin ...

$18.99 Soprano Eladia Roberta Welch-Marchetti Luna, soprano and lyricist, has performed opera, zarzuela, and songs of Latin America, Spain, France, and Italy in the United States and in Mexico. The daughter of an opera singer, she began music and dance lessons at an early age at the Conservatorio Nacional de Panamá. Her first teacher and major influence in the Bel Canto vocal technique and operatic repertoire was her mother, coloratura soprano Dorotea Marchetti, who encouraged her to pursue formal voice studies, at the age of seventeen, with Maestro Renato del Giudice in Napoli. She later completed her B.A. degree in Spanish and Voice (Opera) at the University of New Mexico (UNM). Luna sang several seasons with the Opera Workshop at UNM, and was dialogue coach and performed with ¡Viva Zarzuela! in Albuquerque and at the International Zarzuela Festival at the Chamizal Theater in El Paso, Texas. Luna's father was a linguist, amateur singer and bass player who loved the popular, traditional, and folkloric music of Latin America and Spain. From her childhood roots in Panamá under his tutelage to the present, Luna has specialized in the vocal interpretation of this music. She was influenced profoundly by composers such as AgustÃn Lara, MarÃa Grever, Rafael Hernández, Ernesto Lecuona, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, and singers, Lola Beltrán, Virginia Lopez, Rosita Quintana, Bidu Sayâo, and Mercedes Sosa, to name just a few. Luna has performed in and directed Hispanic cultural programs, including performances of the traditional Mexican pageant, Las Posadas, on the television program Somos Bilingües en KOAT. She has performed with piano, orchestra, guitar trio, conjunto, folkloric and Mariachi accompaniment in a wide variety of Latin musical styles. In addition to living in Panamá, Italy, and Eritrea with her parents, Luna lived, sang, and wrote in Mexico for four and a half years where she received critical acclaim for her vocal performances, as well as, her poems and short stories. She sang with Marta Muñoz and Carlos Lago, and with the folkloric group, Kiacalli, as well as with Brazilian guitarist, Rubem Hofliger. She performed at the Casa del Artista on the Island of the Rio Cuale and for the Puerto Vallarta Cultural Program where she debuted two original songs, Cancion del mar and Amame, written in collaboration with Herrera-Alvarez.Baritone Jose ...
