This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Dominic Kelly (oboe). Audio Mixers: Dave Way; David Tickle; Fionn O Lochlainn; Heff Moraes; Jack Joseph Puig; John Kelton; Mark Cross; Nick Wollage; Steve Power; Bill Bottrell; Bob Clearmountain. Arranger: Gene Page. Based on the comic best-seller, Bridget Jones's Diary documents a year in the life of an unmarried 30-something publisher. She searches for love, self-confidence, and a slimmer waistline in a struggle to become the "perfect modern woman." The resulting soundtrack assembles a cavalry of strong female artists. Chaka Khan's dance anthem "I'm Every Woman" feels like the centerpiece for this collection that includes new music from Sheryl Crow, Shelby Lynn, and Tracy Bonham. Aside from score composer Patrick Doyle, the only boys invited to play here are British heartthrob Robbie Williams and Marvin Gaye, who shares his space with Diana Ross on their Motown classic, "Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)." Williams appears twice and offers one of the many remakes on the album, a charming version of Frank Sinatra's "Have You Met Miss Jones?" Other covers include a just-as-sappy rendition of Eric Carmen's "All By Myself" and a smooth R&B take on Van Morrison's "Someone Like You." Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell contributes a catchy but slightly painful version of "It's Raining Men," while some of the album's more interesting tracks come from its lesser-known artists. Popular U.K. acts Gabrielle and Alisha's Attic deliver distinctive ballads, and promising New Yorker Rosey brands her own form of bluesy pop/rock on "Love." Despite several edgy performers, the collection has an easy listening feel. It lacks the feel-good hits common to successful soundtracks and may have been well served to trade in some of the sentiment for a little more fun. However, each selection feels right for the film. The album is nostalgic while still in vogue, full of both kitsch and ardor, just like any romantic comedy should be. ~ Brad Kohlenstein Based on the popular book of the same name, the film BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY stars America's sweetheart Renee Zellweger as the winsomely cute but uproariously neurotic Bridget Jones. A single woman in her 30s, Jones must cope with all the internal angst that description implies. The film's soundtrack, which appropriately consists mostly of tunes by female artists, is something of a mirror to the character's rollercoaster-like emotional/romantic life. There's a wide cross-section of artists presented here, from pop-country diva Shelby Lynne to folk-rock heroine Shawn Colvin and R&B legend Chaka Khan. Some of the most interesting moments, though, include the Diana Ross/Marvin Gaye duet on "Stop, Look, Listen (to Your Heart)" and Spice Girl Geri Halliwell's take on the old Weather Girls dancefloor anthem "It's Raining Men," which takes on a winning ironic feel in the context of the film. Bridget Jones' Diary Soundtrack
$5.95 The Judds: Naomi Judd, Wynonna Judd (vocals). Additional personnel: Don Potter (acoustic & electric guitars); Mark Casstevens (guitar, harmonica); Sonny Garrish (steel guitar, dobro); Bobby Ogdin, Gene Sisk (piano); Jack Williams (bass); Eddie Bayers (drums). Recorded at Creative Workshop, Nashville, Tennessee. Despite the promise of their self-titled debut album, Naomi and Wynonna Judd struck pay dirt by issuing the bona fide classic Why Not Me, their sophomore outing from 1984. It was produced by Brent Maher and recorded with a small group of session players who were chosen as carefully as the songs were. From the opening track, the title cut, written by greats Harlan Howard, Sonny Throckmorton, and Maher, it is obvious what a showcase this is for Wynonna Judd's stylized singing. Her big throaty voice rings clear and wide, pulling up every ounce of emotion from the song's root; her phrasing is perfect, and Naomi's harmonies are golden; they soar, float, and lilt in contrast, complement, and counterpoint to her daughter's lead. The elder Judd is also a fine songwriter in that track two, "Mr. Pain," is one of the finest songs on the set, full of beauty and vulnerability but ever present ...
