| | Robert Cray Shoulda Been Home CD Robert Cray Discography of CDs
Additional personnel includes: Steve Jordan (guitar, drums, percussion, background vocals); Andrew Love (tenor saxophone); Ben Cauley (trumpet); Jack Hale (trombone); Willie Weeks (bass).
Perhaps the most telling tune on Shoulda Been Home is the T-Bone Walker-influenced "Renew Blues," not because of the style, but because the slow blues fades out after just one tiny minute. By contrast, the mellow soul sway of "Out of Eden" stretches out to over nine minutes. Robert Cray has been heralded as a savior of modern blues, but the truth is Cray's music is much closer to the vintage soul of O.V. Wright and Otis Redding than the 12-bar form of B.B. King or Albert King. Granted, his punctuating Stratocaster guitar riffs borrow from the books of all the blues masters, but his songwriting and arranging don't. Often backed by arpeggiated guitar chords, Cray's vocals are front and center here, passionately leaning into these predominantly slow or mid-tempo tunes. By contrast, only a couple of cuts are upbeat enough to really get the knees a-shakin'. The infectious opening cut "Baby's Arms" -- the best tune on the record -- could have been a hit single for Stax Records, and Sir Mack Rice's upbeat "Love Sickness" was a hit for Stax Records. Meanwhile, "Help Me Forget," with its mellow, candlelight mood, could have been a hit for Barry White. In fact, most of the tunes on Shoulda Been Home are the perfect compliment for sharing a big can of Schlitz Malt Liquor with the one you love in a dimly lit room. Ironically, three of the 12 tunes herein are much more standard blues forms than Cray may have ever released: the aforementioned "Renew Blues," as well as a pair of Elmore James covers. Robert Cray may be the savior of vintage soul, but he does just enough to warrant the label of "blues savior" as well. ~ Scott Cooper

Shoulda Been Home
$8.99 SWEET TEA was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
Over the years, blues guitar hero Buddy Guy has embraced everything from Chicago blues to R&B and pop balladry, always retaining his hardcore blues underpinning and fretboard wizardry as touchstones. While SWEET TEA represents a significant stylistic detour for Guy, it's a surprisingly familiar one. Seemingly inspired by the raw, electrified Mississippi blues of Fat Possum recording artists such as R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough, Guy presents one of the most impassioned, gritty albums ...

Shoulda Been Home
$13.49 SMOKIN' JOINT was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album.
Best known for fronting Texas legends The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Kim Wilson spent much of the '90s balancing his time between his old group and kick-starting his solo career. In parlaying the experience of playing an average of over 200 dates annually, Wilson's first live solo release SMOKIN' JOINT finds him serving up club dates recorded in Phoenix and Hermosa Beach, California in 1999 and 2000. With the Hollywood Fats rhythm section of bassist Larry Taylor and drummer Richard Innes anchoring the proceedings on both gigs, Wilson cuts loose on a pair of ...

Shoulda Been Home
$16.89 Like many soul-jazz musicians, Melvin Sparks moved into funkier directions as the mid-'70s approached, whether out of pressure from marketing trends, a desire to explore that area, or both. Two of his albums from this era, 1973's Texas Twister and 1975's '75, were combined into one disc for this CD reissue. As funk-influenced soul-jazz efforts go, 1973's Texas Twister is a decent one, though not innovative or tremendously ...

Shoulda Been Home
$13.85 This solid entry in the Classics Chronological Series contains all of the titles recorded by Count Basie and his orchestra between January 17 and July 25, 1952, a period during which this band was signed to Norman Granz's Clef record label. Basie, who had been forced to scale his group down to septet and octet dimensions for more than a year beginning in 1950, had begun recording with a powerful new 16-piece unit in April of 1951. Nine months on, this ensemble was well on the way to virtually redefining the art of big-band jazz. Input from arranger/composers Sy Oliver, Buster Harding, and Neal Hefti add a luster to ...

Shoulda Been Home
$14.95 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Another in a series of undiluted blues-rock offerings from guitarist Walter Trout, Relentless, his 11th disc since 1990, doesn't offer any surprises. Released in conjunction with a DVD, the album was recorded live in the Netherlands club The Paradiso on a single day with little post-production sweetening or audience intervention. This results in a successful ...
