Collectables Records' two-CD set By Request/Sing to Me, Mr. C. combines two early-'60s Perry Como albums. By Request, actually the later of the two discs, having been released initially in 1962, finds Como tackling some of the best songs of the day, the album given over to early-'60s hits like "Can't Help Falling in Love" and "Moon River." Of course, those songs are closely associated with other singers, but Como puts his stamp on them, as he does with such quality material as "Maria" from West Side Story and "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music. Sing to Me, Mr. C., originally released in 1961, keys off the popular medley segment of Como's TV show, complete with performances of his opening and closing themes, plus six medleys of three songs each. (The nearly 43-minute running time, unusually long for a pop album of the era, made it impossible for Collectables to put the two albums on one CD.) The medleys don't usually have any apparent thematic or musical cohesion, and especially on record they just seem like a series of unrelated songs, some with little space in between. But again the material is terrific, including many vintage standards and Broadway or Hollywood hits written by the likes of Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Lerner & Loewe, Cole Porter, and Rodgers & Hammerstein. Como is given excellent support on both discs by the string-filled Mitchell Ayres Orchestra and the Ray Charles Singers, with special emphasis placed on the contributions of guitarist Tony Mottola on the second disc. ~ William Ruhlmann

Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) The best singer, the best crooner, the best albums Perry Como is my favorite singer. He is, in my opinion and many others, the greatest "crooner." I also like Frank Sinatra, Jack Jones, and the instrumental music of Jackie Gleason (among others), but Perry Como is the best. These 2 albums are my favorite albums (cd's) ever recorded (next only to some christmas albums). The best one is SING TO ME, MR. C. This is the second disc on this 2 cd set. It is flawless (except for a poor remastering job - but you should get used to it). Perry Como is the best singer, he is just so relaxed and the atmosphere of "casual" is fully evident as he sings songs like SMILE, I'VE GROWN ACCUSTOMED TO HER FACE, THE WAY YOU LOOK TONIGHT, THIS NEARLY WAS MINE, BLUE SKIES, HERE'S THAT RAINY DAY, and every other song. There is not one weak song here anywhere. Many of these songs are my favorite version of the song. An absolute perfect album (cd) and my favorite. The first cd, BY REQUEST, is almost as good as he sings my favorite versions of MOONRIVER, THE SWEETEST SOUNDS, MARIA, LOLLIPOPS AND ROSES, and even a few more. Once again, there is not one bad song on this album either. Everything is great (except the poor remastering job). These are, I believe, the greatest "crooner" albums out there (at least that I know of) and if you like the crooner style of music and don't have this, get it. I'm sure it really could become your favorite cd's you will own. They are mine. Submitted by a reviewer (Orleans, Ontario, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$42.39 Following his tenure in pioneering German metal band the Scorpions and U.K. hard rockers UFO, guitarist Michael Schenker formed his own band with singer Gary Barden, debuting with 1980's MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP, featuring the single "Cry for the Nations."
After his lengthy stints with the Scorpions and UFO, Michael Schenker could be forgiven for indulging his incendiary fretboard skills throughout the entirety of this 1980 solo debut. Instead, it's a solid group effort that has aged surprisingly well, with Schenker artfully deploying his talents on full-bodied hard rock outings such as the opening "Armed and Ready" and the riff-heavy "Victim of Illusion." Vocalist Gary Barden proves himself more than able to withstand Schenker's pyrotechnics, while the whole enterprise is propelled by the remarkable percussive dexterity of the veteran British drummer Simon Phillips.
The concept may seem patently absurd, but guitarists were held in such high regard during the late '70s and early '80s that many elite players were given to tantrums and notions of self-worship usually reserved only for singers and divas. And maybe no one better exemplified this six-string megalomania than German guitarist Michael Schenker, whose turbulent flights of emotional fancy had already earned him the "Mad Michael" nickname during his mercurial tenure with Brit rockers UFO. Of course, this behavior simply went into overdrive when the guitar legend launched the Michael Schenker Group with a 1980 self-titled album, which ...
