What Matters album
$6.19 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
What Matters CD music
$6.19 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition ...

What Matters music CDs
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided ...
| | Antony I Am A Bird Now CD (2005)
What Matters songs
$12.49 Though he probably achieved his greatest mainstream recognition backing up Lou Reed on tour, idiosyncratic songbird Antony is a fully established artiste in his own right. Backed by the Johnsons, as on I AM A BIRD NOW, he crafts delicate ballads that skirt the lines between cabaret, artsong, and pop, with the kind of voice that Stephin Merritt would probably kill for. Antony's ...

What Matters songs
$14.69 This disc of Mississippi field recordings assembled by legendary Memphis producer and session player Jim Dickinson is a fascinating mix of ragged and intimate roots music, stuff that falls so far outside the realm of the commercial music scene that its basic rawness can feel like a breath of fresh spring air. Opening with the primal North Mississippi fife and drum sound of Alec Teal and Butter Biscuit on "Roll Me Over Slow," and including blues tracks by Furry Lewis, Mose Vinson, and others, this loose-knit compilation ...
| | 4 Women No Cry CD (2005) (Import) Germany
What Matters album
$15.05 This Monika release 4 Women No Cry, features 4 new and underappreciated female talents from around the world -- Rosario Blefari's 'Partir Y Renunciar', Tusia Beridze's 'Gorod', Eglantine Gouzy's 'Nurse Song' & Catarina Pratter's 'Dreamin' Of Love'. 2005.
Released by the excellent Monika label, this compilation -- planned to be the first in a series -- has a concept summed up in the title: four women from different countries, all known for working in electronic/dance styles, each contributing a slew of songs. Everyone's tracks are grouped together, so the end result is more like a collection of four EPs, but the transitions between the artists are smoothly managed and the end result is a fine showcase for all four. Argentina's Rosario Blefari begins the album, her "Partir y Renunciar" starting as a murky drone before adding a clattering, hollow beat and dub bass as the setting for her gentle singing and a touch of acoustic guitar. It's a sharp blend that emphasizes the electronics first and foremost, as her other songs like "Nunca," a slow, moody piece, and the concluding collage of beats and loops, "Vidriera Chilena," make clear. ...
