Legendary spoken-word icon Butch Willis kicks off the 2001 version of the Teenbeat Records sampler series with "Amateur on Plastic." His crazed coffeehouse rant is followed by Jonny Cohen's ode to Washington D.C., simply called "Washington D.C." These label samplers work best when they serve as a record label's opportunity to put their best foot forward. Teenbeat Records started out as a way for Mark Robinson to record and distribute the D.C. area's brightest independent rock and pop bands. While the label has stretched out to include artists from all over the world, it remains the preeminent label for Washington D.C.-area indie rock and pop. Highlights on Teenbeat Sampler 2001 include the computerized vocals of Brooklyn's tha Cheeky Bastid on their track "Money on You," as well as the sweet vocals of Tracy Shedd on the simple and serene "Circles." The Long Goodbye epitomize everything a Teenbeat band should be. The brazen, pop-filled hooks on their track "Fashion of Fear" are mixed with powerful, bright vocals. Mark Robinson appears twice on the disc, singing on Flin Flon's "Upper Ferry (Version)" and on his own on "Sskii Jjumpp," a remake of the Olympic Death Squad's "Ski Jump." Currituck Country surprises all with a country version of the Unrest classic "Isabel." Bonus tracks on the disc include Aden's "Matinee Idol" from their Hey 19 disc, "A Sparkling Mix" by Eggs, "Deep Red" by Versus, as well as a gem from deep inside the Teenbeat archives. That last unnamed bonus track is performed by Phil Krauth's late-'80s project Clarence. The song's mixture of intricate guitar and hazy, experimental sounds hinted at Krauth's brilliant post-Unrest albums that came in the 1990s. Trevor Kampmann of HollAnd produced many of the tracks. He also mastered the compilation. ~ Stephen Cramer Teenbeat Sampler 2001 Music Teenbeat Sampler 2001 Review

Teenbeat Sampler 2001 album
$19.98 It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, Live Anthology almost overcompensates for the long wait by offering almost too much music, cherrypicking highlights from 1978 to 2007. In its simplest incarnation, Live Anthology is a super-affordable, four-disc box set running 48 tracks, which is eight cuts longer than Springsteen's box, plenty long enough for most fans, but in its deluxe version, available only through Best Buy, there's an additional CD, plus two previously unreleased DVDs -- a 1978 New Years Eve concert from Santa ...
| | John Mayer Battle Studies CD (2009)
Teenbeat Sampler 2001 CD music
$11.17 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something perfectly appropriate for a make-out album like this. Sometimes, Mayer dips too heavily toward the texture, but he can't resist a good, tight melody ...

| | Sham 69 Adventures Of Hersham Boys CD (1979)
Teenbeat Sampler 2001 music CDs
$12.39 On their first album, Sham 69 sounded like a gang of energetic punk rock simpletons, well-meaning and enthusiastic if not especially gifted, but things had taken a decided turn for the worst by the time they'd cut The Adventures of the Hersham Boys in 1979. Where their early recordings took a lean, stripped-down approach, like a Cockney version of the Ramones, this album is dominated by sludgy tempos, pompous "anthemic" melodies, absurd neo-Rick Wakeman keyboard lines, and shouted mass choruses that suggest anyone willing to drink a free beer ...
