This, the third disc from Spain's leading roots ensemble, features a mixture of old and new. It continues to offer up the group's time-machine stew of delectable bits and pieces of Spanish musical history. It still uses an extraordinary collection of instruments, modern and medieval, Spanish and Moslem. What's new is the album's foray into Japanese music, "Gujo Bushi," and the occasional use of electric guitar. Though it's harder to pin down, the group seems to have dug deeper into music of the modern Spanish countryside. This new -- or newly deepened -- exploration of folk music results in two of the album's most intriguing tunes: First is "Ramo Verde," a Castillian folk song with great atmosphere, featuring a woman vocalist for the first time in the group's history. Second is the title track, which is a primitive tango and which most lamentably ends just when it's getting going. The brevity of the songs is a serious concern on "Cruzando el Rio": The 11 tracks total just 36 minutes, allowing too little time for development and no time for the epic grandeur of "Nu Alrest" off of the group's first album, Rumba Argelina. Still, this group never fails to be interesting. ~ Kurt Keefner

Radio Tarifa Cruzando El Rio Songs Cruzando El Rio Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) It Just Gets Better I'm not purchased anything from Radio Tariffa is quite a while. I listened to what I had, but for some reason didn't check to see if there were further releases.
But I finally did and ordered this. It is more complex than the former releases. It's got more parts and a nice variety of cuts. It's nice to see that the group is still interested in new things as they could coast on for a long time since they fill a niche few do.
Tr it; you'll like it. Submitted by morgantrike (Wharton, TX, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Perfect fusion - you can't see the join Tarifa boldly take any influence they see fit and meld into their own breathtaking sound. Whilst primarily driven by traditional Spanish Flamenco sounds and a heady infusion of North African zip, they aren't afraid to experiment, and the end result is extraordinary.
And do not miss this band live - they are simply brilliant, possibly the best live band I have had the privilege to see. I recently saw them in Newcastle and they tore the house down - musicianship of a calibre that defies description, coupled with an intensity and passion that overwhelms. In some ways, a great rock and roll band! Do not miss! Submitted by Simon (England) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Cruzando El Rio album
$14.79 The concept of this debut album from Spain's leading roots ensemble is that you are listening to a radio broadcast in Tarifa, Spain's southernmost point, so that you might hear a mixture of sounds from Spain and North Africa. And indeed fuzzy, distant radio sounds introduce one song and close the album. The album features an incredible variety of instruments, including among many others: guitar, tar (Persian lute), buzuki (Greek mandolin), derbouka (North African clay drum), ney (Arabic flute), crumhorn (a loud, buzzing Medieval wind instrument), and the Indian harmonium. The group is not shy about including ...

Cruzando El Rio CD music
$15.65 A TODOS CUBA LE GUSTA was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Performance.
A lively, spontaneous record that manages to sound both relaxed and forceful at the same time, A Toda Cuba Le Gusta shows off the talents of many of Cuba's elder statesmen of Afro-Cuban jazz. Over gently pulsating conga grooves and low-register ostinatos, such luminaries as pianist Ruben Gonzalez and singer Manuel "Puntillita" Licea float dramatic melodies, as their ...

Cruzando El Rio album
$8.69 In combining members of his longtime band Crazy Horse and those of more recent accompanists Booker T. & the MG's, Neil Young effectively fuses the gritty guitar-rock of his salad days with churning soul grooves on ARE YOU PASSIONATE? The '60s R&B influence is clear from the start, with opening cut "You're My Girl," which sounds like a cross between vintage Motown and one of Booker T.'s lost gems, all chirping organ and ...
