In the trio of Ace CDs that document Fulson's stint with Kent in the 1960s, Black Nights covers the first part of that era (although, confusingly, it was not the first of the reissues to be released). The 1965 release "Black Nights" itself was his big success of the period, stopping just outside the R&B Top Ten and even getting into the bottom of the pop charts. A brassy and sassy feel-good tune despite the sorrowful lyrics, it also features a guitar with a twang so unusual it verges on sounding rather like an electric sitar. It's the unquestioned highlight of a collection that documents a time at which Fulson was modernizing, but only slightly, his brand of urban blues. All of the material dates from the mid-'60s, much of it written by Fats Washington, though Fulson wrote a few of these numbers himself. It's well-constructed blues-R&B with adult lyrics and just a slight 1960s soul influence (especially in some of the horn arrangements). It sounds like it could have been recorded in the 1950s, which is not so much of a drawback as the mid-tempo similarity of many of the songs to each other, and the lack of many tunes on the same level as "Black Nights." The guitar still stings admirably, though. Two of the songs were previously unissued. ~ Richie Unterberger
24 track compilation is part two of a three part retrospective of Fulson's great blues recordings for the Kent label in the 1960s. This volume concentrates on his debut recordings for Kent, highlighted by his national hit "Black Night," plus two never be

Black Nights
$16.65 THE FINAL KENT YEARS compiles tracks from NOW! (1968) and LOVEMAKER (1978) and contains a rare single released in 1972.
The last of Ace's three compilations devoted to Fulson's Kent product basically combines his late-'60s Now! album with his 1978 Lovemaker album, adding three unissued cuts and a 1972 single. Now! was actually comprised largely of 1967-1968 singles, and it's this material, ...
| | Georgie Fame On The Right Track: Beat, Ballad & Blues 1964-1971 - A Complete Hit Collection CD (2004) (Import) Australia
Black Nights
$20.09 There have been several Georgie Fame compilations over the past decade, but it is this one on Raven that boils all of it down to the essence of his contribution to the Brit R&B beat-crazy scene of the 1960s and early '70s. Here are the singles, the hits, the near misses, and the worthy album cuts compiled to show the audacity, imagination, and wild, swinging toughness of Fame. Fame's earliest influences were Fats Domino and Little Richard, but by the time he cut his first album, Rhythm and Blues at the Flamingo, live at Great Britain's notorious ...

Black Nights
$9.39 This is a 20-track anthology gathering both solo material by British pop singer Marti Pellow and songs by his original band Wet Wet Wet.
Marti Pellow Sings the Hits of Wet Wet Wet effectively replaces the group's two greatest-hits collections, End of Part One and Part One, gathering highlights from Wet Wet Wet's career such as the international hit "Love Is All Around" as well as singles like "Angel Eyes," "Sweet Little Mystery," "Temptation," and "With a Little Help from My Friends." While the band's smooth, soulful pop sound isn't exactly cutting edge, it hasn't dated ...

Keyboard MagazineCHECK OUT THE FIRST REVIEWS OF "THIS CHRISTMAS MORNING"What a pleasant sound to wake up to on a Saturday morning! I didn't know what to expect from Leslie Ritter and Scott Petito's This Christmas Morning. Self-described as "ambient folk", this is a warm, melding of acoustic and new age sensibilities. This Christmas Morning is a treasure trove of new contemporary Christmas tunes, several penned by Ritter and Petito. I particularly enjoyed the melody and the slightly Celtic sensibility of the title track. Leslie Ritter has the kind of voice you just want ...
| | Buck Clayton 1953, Vol. 2 CD (2006)
Black Nights
$18.05 This fourth volume in the Classics Buck Clayton chronology is mainly devoted to the excellent music he recorded in Paris during the first two weeks of November 1953. Much different from the old-fashioned jazz he blew with Mezz Mezzrow during the same tour, this material represents a fresh, modern approach to the traditions Clayton had helped to establish with (and without) Count Basie during the 1930s and '40s. Tracks one through five showcase informal jam bands co-led by Clayton and drummer Gerard Pochonet. There are several ...
