Q (3/01, p.112) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...An album devoted entirely to his love of good wine....Most of the highly literate lyrics use wine as a metaphor...while the album's general mix of gentle melodies with mellow acoustic and electric guitars gradually makes its mark." Quiet, reflective songs about wine and life This is an album of good, if rarely outstanding songs. Stewart is lyrically very good (as usual), ranging from the humorous "The Night That The Band Got The Wine" through a number of reflections on life, change, and the passage of time, presented via the metaphor of fine wine. Instrumentally, this is a well-played album, very skillfully arranged by producer and guitarist Laurnece Juber. "Waiting For Margaux" features Jim Cox playing jazz-styled piano, and Juber's electric guitar adds to "Under A Wine-Stained Moon." Neither song, however, is as melodically interesting as it is instrumentally well-crafted. The best songs, and they are very good, are stylistically closest to Stewart's folk roots: "House of Clocks," the charming title song, and a Bert Jansch tune, "SoHo" (not Stewart's 1973 song). I also enjoyed "Sergio" a lot. Four stars for long-time fans; others should listen to the album first. Submitted by Ken (New Haven, CT) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Confussion, but a great CD This CD has such a wonderful sound, but the words are a bit confussion on some songs ( If I knew more about wine it would sound even better ). "House of Clocks", "Waiting for Margaux" , "SoHo", and the song I like most is "Outes Les Etoiles" It has that polkia sound, makes you want to get up and dance. This cd is not for everyone but if your an Al Stewart fan this is a great one for your collection. Submitted by Scott (St. Joseph Mo.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A Bad Album. Just to fans. Sorry about my english, I’m from Brasil.
Al Stewart has 3 wonderful albums: YEAR OF THE CAT (1976) – the best work, BETWEEN THE WARS (1995) – the second best work and PAST PRESENT AND FUTURE (1974) – the third best work. So, is logical, DOWN IS THE CELLAR, 2000, is not like the great works of Al Stewart. The point is, the previous albums is wonderful in my opinion, the second best work of Stewart (BETWEEN THE WARS, 1995). So, whats happened with Al between 1995 and 2000????? DOWN IN THE CELLAR has just 2 wonderful songs: ‘Down In The Cellars’ and ‘House Of Clocks’. What a shame if you think in the wonderful previous work BETWEEN THE WARS. I think that DOWN IN THE CELLAR it seams like the album FAMOUS LAST WORDS,1993, a bad album too, with just 2 wonderful songs, ‘Angel Of Mercy’ and ‘Feel Like’. Well, I just can say that somethin wrong happened with Al between 1995 – 2000. There are 3 good songs too, but just ‘good’ songs: ‘Tasting History’, ‘SoHo’ and ‘Under A Wine-Stained Moon’. Well, but because the wonderful song ‘Down In The Cellars’ and the beautiful ‘House Of Clocks’, I put 3 stars to this album. I just hope that the next album (next june now, 2005) goin to be a great album .So, we need to wait now. Until the next review about the next album, ‘’A Beach Full Of Shells’’ (2005), girls and boys!!

What Happened? A pale shadow of what Al used to be.His last decent album was 24 Carrots and that was almost 25 years ago.Since then it's been a slow downward spiral that has resulted in this easily forgotton cd. Submitted by berman100 (Perth Amboy,New Jersey) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Down In The Cellar CD music
$16.85 A rather bland Northern Soul collection with only a handful of stellar performances out of the 25-tracks. Two selections from B. J. Thomas "I Don't Have A Mind Of My Own" and Ronnie Milsap's "Ain't No Soul (Left In These Old Shoes)," get soulful treatments from the blue eye soul singers. Jack Montgomery, unfamiliar to most (he only cut a handful of 45's) does "Do You Believe It"; the soulful Detroit singer never got a smidgen of recognition in the States. Strangely includes, the Esquires' "Get On Up" a successful record that's not traditional Northern Soul, and The Chart's doo wopish "Desiree." This compilation is hard to get into, too many weak spots. Also contains Pop/R&B tracks by Leslie Uggams," Eartha Kitt, and an obscure Shirelles' tune "Last Minute Miracle." ~ Andrew Hamilton
There are numerous 1960s soul compilations on the Kent label that seem geared for the Northern Soul ...

Down In The Cellar music CDs
$13.85 Them's second post-Van Morrison album, even more than their first such effort (Now & Them), grew further away from their mid-'60s style, to the point where there were few audible links to how Them sounded in the British Invasion era. And like Now & Them, it was an intermittently worthwhile but somewhat characterless record, reflecting late-'60s trends in album-oriented rock without adding much to them or innovating paths of their own. It was even more Los Angeles-psychedelia-influenced than their prior LP, taking the lead of Now & Them's strongest cut ("Square Room") to explore sitar-laden raga-rock on several songs. "Time Out for Time In" adds a nice waltz overlay to the raga-rock sound, but "Black Widow Spider" and "Just on Conception" frankly live up to the stereotypes of "oh wow!" hippie-trippy word soups from the era. So does "The Moth," but at least there some Roger McGuinn-like vocals and dreamy orchestration add spice. Other songs are competently done but nonstandout heavy soul rock, with "She Put a Hex on You" sounding right off the cutting room floor of a 1968 psychedelic dance rock club movie scene; you ...
