FOR GIRLS WHO GROW PLUMP IN THE NIGHT is a 1971 release by Canterbury progressive rockers Caravan. Remaster adds extra songs. 1973 classic of jazzy prog rock that finds Canterbury's finest reunited with their original keyboardist Dave Sinclair. Throwing jazz and rock together in the same musical stew is almost always a dangerous idea. For every BITCHES BREW, there are a thousand Spyro Gyras. Canterbury, England's Caravan, however, is the rare exception that unites jazz sensibilities with a thoroughly rock approach, creating something wholly unique in the process. FOR GIRLS WHO GROW PLUMP IN THE NIGHT reunites the band with original keyboardist Dave Sinclair and new viola player Peter Geoffrey Richardson, and the result is perhaps the band's most accomplished long-player. This 2007 reissue includes a few great demos as well--most notably "Derek's Long Thing" and "Surprise, Surprise." After the musical uncertainty of Waterloo Lily, Caravan returned with their most inspired recording since In the Land of the Grey and Pink. The splendidly titled For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night is several steps ahead in terms of fresh musical ideas that wholly incorporate the band's trademark humor within the otherwise serious and challenging sonic structures. Two of the more dominant reasons for the change in Caravan's sound were the return of keyboardist Dave Sinclair and the addition of violist Peter Geoffrey Richardson. Die-hard fans gladly welcomed Sinclair back, however, Richardson was met with heckles from enthusiasts during live appearances. They were soon silenced as his place on For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night easily ranks among Caravan's watershed moments. There are perhaps none better than the mesmerizing counterpoint melodies he weaves during the "L'Auberge Du Sanglier" suite. While not completely abandoning their jazz leanings, For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night is considerably focused back into the rock genre. Ironically, the album also features some rather elaborate orchestration. In context, it is quite effective in creating emphasis -- especially on the leadoff track "Memory Lain, Hugh," as well as the dreamy mid-tempo "The Dog, The Dog, He's At It Again." The remastered CD also includes five additional tracks. The first four are demos featuring the band without orchestra and with some notable differences, such as the distinct lead guitar opening to "Memory Lain, Hugh." "Derek's Long Thing" is another instrumental piece penned by keyboardist Derek Austin -- one of the two transitional Caravan members chosen to replace Steve Miller. A must-own for inclined parties. ~ Lindsay Planer

$8.65 The Bronx: Matt Caughthran (vocals); Joby J. Ford (guitar); James Tweedy (bass guitar); Jorma Vik (drums). Actually, they're from Los Angeles. But other than the geographical confusion, there are few missteps on the self-titled major-label debut from neo-hardcore band the Bronx. While their first album (also entitled THE BRONX, and produced by Guns N' Roses' Gilby Clarke) was punk in the vein of the MC5 and Stooges, this disc is more varied. The band was joined by uber-producer Michael Beinhorn, and recorded live in the studio to preserve a rougher, more authentic sound. What holds THE BRONX together is singer Matt Caughthran's gravelly shouted vocals and a stellar rhythm section. The songs go from the pounding "Small Stone" to the more melodic "Oceans of Class" and "Dirty Leaves." "White Guilt," on which Gilby Clarke guests, is laid-back guitar rock that has a slight country tinge to it. But that track, while excellent, is an anomaly on an album of powerful, original rock. Following up their ...

Depeche Mode: David Gahan (vocals); Martin Gore (keyboards, synthesizer, background vocals); Andrew Fletcher, Alan Wilder (keyboards, synthesizer). Recorded at The Garden, London, England. The full addition of Alan Wilder to Depeche Mode's lineup created a perfect troika that would last another 11 years, as the combination of Martin Gore's songwriting, Wilder's arranging, and David Gahan's singing and live star power resulted in an ever more compelling series of albums and singles. Construction Time Again, the new lineup's first full effort, is a bit hit and miss nonetheless, but when it does hit, it does so perfectly. Right from the album's first song, "Love in Itself," something is clearly up; Depeche ...
| | Avril Lavigne Best Damn Thing - Limited Edition CD (2007) With DVD; Deluxe Edition
For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night
$15.95 BEST DAMN THING is the third full-length from pop chart upstart Avril Lavigne and shows the artist has lost none of the cheeky, bratty rock edge that put the singer on the map. The album's lead-off single, "Girlfriend," a bouncy pop-punk romp driven by pell-mell energy and a naggingly catchy chorus, is a case in point. "Girlfriend" kicks off the 12-song set with a bang, telling the listener in no uncertain terms that the album is going to be a fast, fun, high-octane ride. Whereas Lavigne's sophomore release, UNDER MY SKIN, showed a more reflective side of the singer, BEST DAMN THING doesn't waste time navel-gazing or brooding about relationships gone wrong. Instead the album revels in punchy, uncomplicated pop delivered with a teenaged sneer (and a few well-placed curse words to keep the parents on their toes). Lavigne still seems a ways off from fully exploring her "mature" side, but this batch of energetic tunes is all the better for it. The best teen pop thrives on good hooks and youthful, devil-may-care attitude, and that's exactly what ...
