| | Warren Haynes Live At Bonnaroo CD (2004)
House Of Cards
$8.39 One of the hardest-working men in show business (after, of course, James Brown), Warren Haynes spent the years preceding LIVE AT BONNAROO juggling gigs with the Dead, Phil Lesh & Friends, Gov't Mule, and the Allman Brothers Band. In 2004, Haynes went on the road as a member of the Dead, also pulling double-duty as an opening act with nothing but his guitar to accompany him. These 16 songs offer a sampling of those solo sets and a fascinating cross-section of material, reflecting the kind of impressive versatility that's allowed Haynes to move between the worlds of rock, blues, and country.
The combination of his gruff yet soulful vocalizing and nimble finger-picking results in moving covers of Grateful Dead classics ("To Lay Me Down," "Stella Blue") mixed in among tunes originally written for Gov't Mule ("Fallen Down") and earlier solo work ("I'll Be the One"). The most pleasant surprises, however, are this guitar hero's credible stabs at Radiohead ("Lucky") and U2 ("One"), two groups not normally associated with the jam-band scene. A duet with South African vocalist Vusi Mahlasela on the uplifting ...

| | Art Of Noise Daft CD (1987)
House Of Cards
$9.89 This collection contains selections from WHO'S AFRAID OF THE ART OF NOISE, MOMENTS IN LOVE, and INTO BATTLE.
For three years Anne Dudley, J.J. Jeczalik, Gary Langan and Trevor Horn endlessly remixed a collection of found sounds, rhythms, melodies and thematic motifs into a number of releases for Horn's ZTT Records. After the other three split from Horn in 1985, themes from these recordings constantly reappeared in their work, but it was not until 1998 that these original recordings were reissued on CD.
The 16-song DAFT contains almost all of the groundbreaking 1983 EP INTO BATTLE, the wellspring for all future AoN projects, along with several stray singles and a good-sized chunk of 1984's WHO'S AFRAID OF THE ART OF NOISE. Among the brilliant tracks are the dreamily lush "Moments In ...

| | Kiss Ace, Gene, Peter, & Paul CD (2006)
House Of Cards
$57.39 Depending on which Kiss fan you ask, the group's 1978 solo albums were either the masked quartet's crowning achievement (from a merchandising standpoint), or they can be pinpointed as the beginning of the end for the original lineup. Either way, all four solo releases have seen numerous re-releases and/or repackagings over the years -- separate picture discs, a single disc Best of the Solo Albums compilation, and more. Nearly 20 years since the solo albums' original release, an import box set was issued that collected all four albums, 2006's Ace, Gene, Peter and Paul. No unreleased songs, demos, pictures or videos of the recording sessions are included, just the original albums, with each member's mug on the front of their respective CD (in fact, the only thing to entice Kiss collectors who already own these albums is a bottle opener that says "Detroit Rock City"). The music remains the same -- Ace Frehley's is the surprise of the bunch and the best, Paul Stanley's is the most Kiss-sounding, Gene Simmons took the most chances and detours, while Peter Criss' bordered on easy listening territory. It's been said before and still holds true -- if you plucked the three best tracks from each solo release, you would have had an extremely strong Kiss studio album. Let's face it though, most purchasers of Ace, Gene, Peter and Paul will not be hearing these tracks for the first time, but rather, looking to complete their extensive Kiss tchotchke collection. ~ Greg Prato
