This low-priced disc is far and away the best single-CD compilation ever issued of the Grass Roots' work, 16 chart singles covering every phase of their history, from 1966's "Where Were You When I Needed You" (in its actual hit version) thru "Let's Live for Today" and "Midnight Confessions" to their last hit, 1972's "The Runway." Listening to this 44-minute compilation, one not only encounters a superb array of catchy songs (and even some of the lesser hits, like the number 61-charting "Come On and Say It" and the number 34-charting "Glory Bound," are compelling pieces of soul-based pop/rock) but also virtuoso production and playing. This 1973 release features what is essentially a Bay Area bar band led by Merl Saunders (keyboards) and Jerry Garcia (guitar) during the latter musician's downtime from the Grateful Dead. Along with the two subsequent "encore" volumes, Live at Keystone includes performances drawn from the quartet's July 10-11, 1973, run in the intimate confines of Keystone Korners in Berkeley. With the support of Bill Vitt(percussion) and John Kahn (bass), the pair jams their way through an eclectic assortment of covers and a few equally inspired original instrumentals. The clavinet and Hammond B-3-driven "Keepers" (aka "Finders Keepers") is one such composition from the team of Saunders and Kahn. This funky rocker pulsates through some downright greasy interactions that recall a cross between Sly Stone and Billy Preston. Their interpretation of "Positively 4th Street" -- the first of two Bob Dylan covers -- is laid-back and bluesy, which allows Garcia to stretch out instrumentally between the verses. His impassioned vocals weave between Saunders' alternating murky and billowing organ fills, adding new depths of empathetic noir. Notably, David Grisman's mandolin runs were not part of the live recording, but overdubbed later. In addition to being an omnipresence during the golden age of television in the early '50s, Jackie Gleason also released a string of best selling albums featuring lush and romantically titled easy listening instrumentals for Capitol Records. On this CD version of the number five charting Jackie Gleason Presents Music to Remember Her, the original 16-track long-player is augmented with five additional songs including tracks from a rare 45, as well as one which remained previously unreleased. The ambiguous "presents" from the title might indicate the extent to which "the great one" had with the actual sounds on this release. However, the original album jacket -- which is reproduced inside the four-panel liner notes booklet -- proclaims "Gleason a gifted songwriter and conductor." Indeed, his composition "Marilyn" is included among the album's motif of songs named after girls. As so far as his skills with a baton, we'll just have to take their word for it. On a musical level, "Dinah," "Stella By Starlight," and "Tangerine" are actually quite sensitive, and are by far the least pretentious sounds on this disc. However, some tracks -- "Sweet Sue, Just You" and "Charmaine" -- end up sounding dated and overtly campy in the process, which could be one of the influences accounting for the unpredicted resurgence in the popularity of easy listening music from the '50s and early ...
