Tool: Maynard James Keenan (vocals); Adam Jones (guitar); Justin Chancellor (bass); Danny Carey (drums). Recorded at Cello Studios, Hollywood, California, The Hook, Big Empty Space and The Lodge, North Hollywood, California. "Schism" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. Audio Mixer: David Bottrill. Recording information: Big Empty Space, North Hollywood, CA; Cello Studios, Hollywood, CA; The Hook, Hollywood, CA; The Lodge, North Hollywood, CA. Illustrator: Alex Grey. Unknown Contributor Role: Vince DeFranco. After an exhaustive five-year litigation battle between the band and their label management, Tool offer up the latest chapter in their musical self-discovery in Lateralus. Make no mistake, this is a prog rock record, reminiscent of King Crimson and Meddle-era Pink Floyd, with a hint of Rush mutated with Tool's signature sonic assault on the ears. Lateralus demands close listening from the first piece onward, as it becomes quickly apparent that this is not going to be an album one can listen to and accept at face value. Complex rhythm changes, haunting vocals, and an onslaught of changes in dynamics make this an album other so-called metal groups could learn from. While some compositions seem out of place, others fit together seamlessly, such as the 23-minute song cycle serving as the climax and resolution of the album. However, the album's most disturbing moment arrives at the end, with dissonant electronic noises placed randomly with a drum solo over a phone call to a talk show discussing the secrets behind Area 51, once again serving as a symbolic gesture from the band encouraging people not to take things at face value and to think for themselves. Overall, a solid, well-produced album from a band that never fails to deliver with each release. ~ Rob Theakston Approaching Tool's LATERALUS with a casual ear would be a careless endeavor, to say the least. The sheer magnitude of the musical and emotional textures is as heady as it is primal. Standing out as one of the defining traits of the Tool sound is Justin Chancellor's hauntingly melodic bass playing, which often launches into a role reversal with the mountainous guitar work of Adam Jones. The best examples of said phenomenon are found in "The Grudge" and "Reflection." Drummer Danny Carey slips easily into the pocket, fearlessly tackling odd time signatures and tasty percussion like few contemporary metal percussionists (best evidenced in "The Patient.") Lyrically, LATERALUS crawls through the cerebral catacombs of vocalist Maynard James Keenan, exploring themes such as the fallout from failed communication ("Schism") and clutching to past pain in a desperate attempt at control ("Grudge"). LATERALUS is yet another art-metal tour de force displaying the collective mastery of Tool.

Carey at his best!! firstly, if you don't like this album why write a review? i don't write anythn on these punk/emo bands, they suck. if you have nothin good 2 add 2 the equation then dont say anythn! no1 values ur opinion!
I got this album after I heard 10,000 days, which is also an excellent album, check it out.
This album is similar to the likes of pink flyod, led zeppelin, rush and king crimson. 'the grudge', 'lateralus', 'schism' and 'ticks and leeches' are stand outs. Lateralus is all Danny Carey! This is possibly the best drumming album of all time. Listen to the drums on ticks and leeches, reflection, the grudge etc. Jone's and Chancellor kick ass, but Carey is far more superior. It is also Maynard at his best with the lyrics, if u wanna hear him at his best with the vocals check out 10,000 days. Submitted by jimmy (Sydney, AUS) Was This Review Helpful? Lateralus
$10.39 Tool: Maynard James Keenan (vocals); Adam Jones (guitar); Paul D'Amour (bass); Danny Carey (drums). Producers: Sylvia Massy, Steve Hansgen, Tool. Recorded at: Sound City, Van Nuys, California and live at Jello Loft, Hollywood, California on December 31, 1991. Personnel: Maynard James Keenan (vocals); Adam Jones (guitar); Danny Carey (drums). Audio Mixer: Sylvia Massy. Recording information: Jello Loft, Hollywood, CA; Sound City Studios, Van Nuys, CA. In retrospect, Opiate seems a little haphazard, but it's possible to hear the seeds of Tool's oppressively bleak, cerebral metal in such cuts as "Sweat" and "Opiate." The two live tracks, "Cold and Ugly" and "Jerk-Off," don't sound out of place, since they share the same churning riffs, black noise, and doom that characterize Tool's sound. This is not as developed as either Undertow or Ænima, but it's possible to hear the roots of those albums all over this EP. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Back in the early months of 1992, alternative rock was exploding. ...

Lateralus
$13.15 Tool: Danny Carey, Paul D'Amour, Maynard James, Adam Jones. Additional personnel: Henry Rollins (vocals). Recorded at Grand Master Studios, Hollywood, California. Just as grunge was reaching its boiling point and radio-friendly punk-pop loomed on the horizon, Tool released Undertow, which firmly reinforced metal's prominence as a musical style -- but, for once, it had something worthwhile to say. At the forefront of Tool's commercial explosion were striking, haunting visuals that complemented the album's nihilistic yet wistful mood. Drawing equal inspiration from Black Sabbath, alternative theories of science, and Eastern ...
