Set in Alabama, an early 19th century adventure of a Kentucky militiaman (John Wayne) protecting his love, a French general's daughter, and other French exiles from land-grabbing criminals. John Breen (John Wayne) is a a Kentucky soldier in the early 1800s who pauses on his way home from the Battle of New Orleans to battle land-claim jumpers and woo the daughter of a French general. Oliver Hardy (of Laurel and Hardy fame) does a solo comedic turn as Breen's sidekick.

The title refers to the night when three men, Randy (Matt Dillon), his cousin Carl (Paul Reiser) and Detective Dehling (John Goodman), all meet Jewel Valentine (Liv Tyler) at a bar called McCool's.
