Modern Favorites CD music
$6.79 The Guess Who always seemed a bit like the Canadian predecessor/counterpart to Grand Funk Railroad, but they typically fared far better with the critics because of the versatility that they possessed. That trait is very evident on this collection of hits and great songs. From the opening "These Eyes," with its orchestral strings and Zombies-like baroque pop feel to the classic AOR crunge of "American Woman," the Guess Who played ...

$13.65 CELTIC THUNDER THE SHOW, the audio companion for the popular PBS television special, showcases the five Irish vocalists in their ideal setting, a stage in Dublin. Celtic Thunder thrives on the contrast of its various voices (four tenors and a baritone) creating a surreal musical landscape. Paul Byrum's assured operatic tones on "Remember Me (Recuerdeme)" crest ...

Modern Favorites music CDs
$11.39 James Chance & The Contortions: James Chance; Jerry Agony, Nic North, Al McDowell (bass guitar); Patrick Geoffrois, Lorenzo Wyche, Fred Wells, Richie Harrison, Anya Phillips.
Recorded in June of 1980, Soul Exorcism proves that jazz, funk, experimental, and new wave make quite an intoxicating mix when perfected. James Chance sums up the proceedings perfectly in the liner notes, where he states that the music perfectly reveals the essence and soul of New York City (even though it was recorded in Rotterdam). Backed up by a stellar backing band, which Chance himself calls one of the most volatile units he's worked with, the Contortions simply shine. Like most other Contortions recordings, cacophony rears its head from time to time, but that's what the band uses to paint different moods and textures: it's not used haphazardly. The whole album is inspired from beginning to end, and features such great tracks as "I Danced with a Zombie," "Exorcise the Funk," and a pair of interesting covers -- Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and James Brown's "King Heroin." [In 2007 the Roir label reissued the album as Soul Exorcism Redux. Three tracks from a 1987 demo session were added to the end of the track list along with new art work.] ~ Greg Prato
Recorded live in Rotterdam, Holland in June, 1980. Includes liner notes by James White.

Modern Favorites album
$12.15 One thing about most hair metal bands of the '80s -- they were not necessarily known to be "proficient" at their respective instruments. But one such group from the genre that certainly had the chops to back up their pretty boy looks was Europe, which prove this theory once again on their 2008 live CD, Almost Unplugged (which was issued as a DVD a year later). Recorded at a venue in Stockholm (called Nalen) on January 26, 2008, Almost Unplugged sees the group joined by a string quartet as they balance originals with a few classic rock nuggets, including Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here," Thin Lizzy's "Suicide," and UFO's "Love to Love," among others, as well as a still-bombastic rendition of "The Final Countdown." Surprisingly, there is no rendition of their power ballad, "Carrie," included here, which you'd think would have fit in well with all the other stripped-down tunes here -- especially when overbearing cheese such as the song "Hero" is included (although admittedly, the song's meaning is heartfelt -- it's a tribute to the late, great Phil Lynott). The histrionics may be toned down a tad here, but Almost Unplugged serves as further proof that Europe remain arena rock kings throughout...Europe. ~ Greg Prato
Europe's singer Joey Tempest: In Stockholm in January 2008 we added a very special concert to our Secret Society tour. We had long talked about doing a 'one off' gig with a string quartet in a more intimate setting. We had also talked about adding songs from artists we admire to our own set-list. After some debating we settled for 'covers' by Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy and UFO. Four bands that had influenced us one way or another. The concert venue we'd chosen was the legendary 'Nalen' in Stockholm. The concert was broadcast live over the internet. We performed brand new re-worked versions of songs like The 'Final Countdown,' 'Rock the Night,' 'Superstitious' amongst others. We also added songs that we seldom play live on our tours. ...
