| | Transglobal Underground Yes Boss Food Corner CD Transglobal Underground Discography of CDs
Transglobal Underground practically invented the ethno-techno genre -- music that combines world music influences with a danceable electronic beat -- back in the late '80s. And as bands like Trance Mission have broken up and artists like Banco De Gaia have moved on, the group has continued to wave the ethno-techno flag high, influencing artists like Talvin Singh and Badawi with its pan-cultural sound. That said, on Yes Boss Food Center you can really feel the loss of vocalist Natacha Atlas, whose solo career denies the band a key element of its trademark sound. Replacement singer Thobekile Doreen Webster does her best on tracks like "Spellbound," but without Atlas, the spotlight rests primarily on Coleridge, whose reggae-influenced raps were never the group's strongest asset. This is decent but frustratingly repetitive dance music that simply doesn't stand up to Transglobal Underground's best work. ~ Bret Love

Q (6/01, p.120) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...There are inspired moments....once again throwing Western, African and Asian rhythms and instrumentation into the melting pot..." CMJ (5/14/01, p.29) - "...With singing generally less notable...other elements come to the fore - more of an Indian influence in the instrumental textures throughout, more funk and hip-hop in the beats and vocals..." $13.29 we are only but mere visitors to this planet, our lives a brief moment in time. and when that moment is finished we shall return back to whence we came. life is a great story but only one act in a play of many. death leads into life again and the story to be continued. "This music is very intriguing, as dark, brooding, and haunting as the angel of death itself." Reviewed by Keith Hannaleck, Progressive World, July 2002 "Moody pop songs with a whaleload of sonic ideas behind them. The songs themselves have a nice flow, blending the diverse sounds into a solid unit. Some conceptual bands sound contrived. Not these folks. Not by a long shot." Reviewed by Aiding and Abetting, July 2002 "blowuphollywood seems like an ironic moniker considering that the project comes across as a soundtrack for a film noir . . . though, ahem, certainly not a Hollywood film score. This music is somehow simultaneously as disturbing as it is beatific, conjoining dirgelike acoustic guitars, surrealistic strings and languorous vocal harmonies into tone poems which literally follow one individual's ethereal passage into afterlife. The mystery is reinforced by the artists' decision to reveal no credits, names or photos, a surprisingly egoless kowtow to the art considering ...
