$12.25 | | David Garrett CD (2009)
Edward Kilenyi: American Columbia Recordings, 1939-1948
$9.79 Feisty re-imaginings of beloved songs from the pop, folk, and classical canon make violinist David Garrett's self-titled album an unpredictable and joyous listen. Garrett--a former student of Itzhak Perlman--has remarkable control over his tone, guiding his violin to sound tremblingly sweet ("Nothing Else Matters"), bluesy and soulful ("Ain't No Sunshine"), jaunty ("Zorba's Dance"), and even aggressive and artfully harsh ("Thunderstruck"), a versatility that allows him to cover Metallica and traditional Hungarian folk dances with equal aplomb.

| | Memoirs Of A Geisha CD (2005) Original Soundtrack
Edward Kilenyi: American Columbia Recordings, 1939-1948
$12.09 For the soundtrack to 2005's MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA, Hollywood composer John Williams unveils one of his most inventive scores. The film, based on Arthur Golden's bestselling novel about a poor girl who becomes a refined geisha in World War II-era Japan, is enhanced by Williams's emotive (and often melancholy) music, which deftly blends orchestral works with passages that feature traditional Japanese instruments such as the shakuhachi and the koto. Remarkably, this mix of western and eastern sounds never comes across as forced, thanks to both Williams's bold musical vision and the outstanding solo contributions of cellist Yo-Yo Ma and violinist Itzhak Perlman. The opening track, "Sayuri's Theme," is a hauntingly beautiful piece, while "The Fire Scene and the Coming of War" evokes an appropriately ominous tone. What is perhaps most striking about GEISHA's score, however, is the use of quiet, reflective moments and pure silence, with Williams effectively adhering to the old adage of "less is more."
Composer: John Williams .
Personnel: Hiromi Hashibe, Masayo Ishigure (koto); Itzhak Perlman (violin); Yo-Yo Ma (cello); Masakazu Yoshizawa (shakuhachi).

| | James Galway Christmas Carol CD (1986)
Edward Kilenyi: American Columbia Recordings, 1939-1948
$8.49 James Galway's Christmas Carol is a richly varied collection of traditional, classical, and Irish carols, all delivered with grace and style. Although Galway never takes risks, it's for the best, because this music sounds best when it's delivered straight. That's the case here -- there may be no surprises on Christmas Carol, but it delivers exactly what his fans want from a Galway holiday album. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
