Argyle Heir is a dreamy collection of orchestral pop songs set in the style of 1960s folk-rock. Gary Olson's lilting baritone vocals are comfortably cushioned in Joe McGinty's colorful string arrangements, which evoke the classic pop arrangements of Brian Wilson and George Martin; their ornate motifs complement the melodic structure of each track without obstructing the minimalist rhythm section. Though Olson handles the singing throughout, Jennifer Baron's rendering of "Catherine Elizabeth," an otherworldly Victorian folktale, recalls a young Marianne Faithfull. Filled with surrealistic lyrics, the crisp sounds of a plectrum stroking the bass and guitar lines, trumpet solos, expertly placed droplets of reverb, classical piano runs, instrumental vignettes, and seamless tempo changes, this collection displays a multi-textured cinematic veneer that's entirely unique, even though its origins lie somewhere in the back of Burt Bacharach's imagination. ~ Tom Semioli

Argyle Heir album
$12.25 By borrowing from the classic conceptual pop albums of the late sixties for their latest offering, Brooklyn's Ladybug Transistor have ended up crafting a late-20th century gem that will most certainly be remembered as one of 1999's most outstanding releases. With housemate Bill Wells helping out behind the boards, the backing tracks of THE ALBERMARLE SOUND could easily be mistaken for lost PET SOUNDS instrumentals. The variety of instruments, ...
| | Built To Spill Ancient Melodies Of The Future CD (2001)
Argyle Heir CD music
$10.45 Built To Spill abandoned any strictly lo-fi leanings long before ANCIENT MELODIES OF THE FUTURE, the band's fifth full-length release, but it is with this album that the trio's near-perfect balance of indie- (almost math-) rock and surprisingly irresistible pop hooks hits stride for a full, satisfying LP. ANCIENT MELODIES OF THE FUTURE retains the line-up of Doug Martsch, bassist Brett Nelson, and drummer Scott Piouf for a third go around, and ...
| | Grant Lee Phillips Mobilize CD (2001)
Argyle Heir music CDs
$15.05 For all his pop instincts, Grant Lee Phillips is ultimately a folk-rocker at heart (hell, he was even the "town troubadour" on TV's GILMORE GIRLS), which is what makes MOBILIZE such a striking anomaly in the singer/songwriter's discography. While he hasn't abandoned his six-string, Phillips leaps into the digital world, adding layers of electronics and programmed rhythms to his sound. It's a testament to the strength of his vision that the production never overtakes the songs, and in the end, MOBILIZE ...

| | Ladybug Transistor CD (2003)
Argyle Heir album
$12.25 Ladybug Transistor's fourth album is the band's first to be recorded outside its own Marlborough Farms studio. They packed up and split to Arizona of all places to work with Calexico producer Craig Schumacher. Their delicate, Baroque, citified chamber pop sound remains fully intact; the only trace of the desert is the occasional pedal steel guitar. The band seems to have shaken off the doldrums that lightly plagued its previous record, 2001's disappointing Argyle Heir, coming up with a killer batch of songs that are catchy and involving. The best aspects ...
