"Put me in coach, I'm ready to play." These are lines familiar to any baseball fan, for John Fogerty's "Centerfield" has become the unofficial song of our national pastime. Those lines also signaled Fogerty's return to the music business after a ten-year absence. The music is mighty familiar, as Fogerty works the same terrain he mined for gold with Creedence Clearwater Revival from 1968-1972. The riff of the opening track, "The Old Man Down the Road," sounds so much like the Creedence hit "Run Through the Jungle" that Fogerty was sued by his former record company for plagiarizing himself. (He won the suit, the court upholding a composer's right to sound like himself.) "Old Man" was a Top Ten single, and this album reached number one itself. "Big Train (From Memphis)" is a rockabilly salute to Elvis, while "I Saw It on TV" takes us on a trip through the '50s and '60s "from Hooter to Doodyville," via the boob tube. "Searchlight" recalls "Keep On Chooglin" and the other extended one-chord jams of the Creedence days. Fogerty also lashes out at his old nemesis Saul Zaentz, head of that former label, Fantasy Records, with whom he had battled (and lost) over rights to his own catalog of Creedence songs. On "Mr. Greed" and "Zanz Kant Danz" (renamed "Vanz Kant Danz" on later pressings due again to the threat of lawsuit), he vents his anger over these past legal battles and foretells the one to come over "Old Man." Fans hoped Centerfield would indeed mark the return of John Fogerty to the playing field, but after releasing the bitter Eye of the Zombie the following year, he disappeared again, not to return until 1997's Blue Moon Swamp. ~ Jim Newsom

John Fogerty Centerfield Songs Centerfield Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) Brilliant! I entirely agree with the reviewer from Canada, this album will be difficult to top. All the songs are excellent. It is rare to hear such stuff these days. John’s Centerfield will definitely standout as one of best recordings ever. Groundbreaking I highly recommend this CD. It was a ground breaking album for John Fogerty
at a time when synth-pop was the thing. The mid 80's
It's a cool mix of classic rock,pop
Country, reggae and is all out Rock n' Roll.
Fogerty played every instrument on this album. If you are a Creedence Clearwater Revival fan you will appreciate"Centerfield". I also highly recommend "Blue Moon Swamp" by John Fogerty.

A period piece (unfortunately) I used to give this album 5 stars, but now I can only give it 3. It has not aged well, and sounds like so many other Big-80's recordings. Despite the joy of the title track, "Rock and Roll Girls," and "I Can't Help Myself," the overriding tone is of bitterness. It was as though the listener had to share Fogerty's anger, without really knowing where it came from. This is most apparent on "Vanz (originally Zanz) Kant Danz," an attack on Fantasy Records president Saul Zaentz, where Fogerty refers to the Jewish Zaentz as a "little pig," which is of course very offensive. "Mr Greed" and "The Old Man Down the Road" may also have been aimed at Zaentz. Furthermore, as great as the LP sounded the first time, the realization soon hit that a lot of this is material that Fogerty could do in his sleep. Still, it all sounded better than 90% of the pap on the radio at the time. Submitted by twi-zon (Springfield, MO, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
It's Astounding! At a time in my life (1985) when I was discovering CCR, since I was too young when they were recording together, I had just gotten to the point where I needed new CCR songs I hadn't heard before. I had played them all over, and over again. Then JC released "Centerfield". It was a breath of fresh air- AND new CCR material. John does pick up where he left off on this LP. A MUST buy! On his first album in 11 years, CCR mastermind Fogerty comes charging out of the gate with undiminished authority. BLUE MOON SWAMP is full of the straight-ahead roots-rock that made Creedence a legend. It's rumored that the recording of this album was painstakingly slow, with Fogerty spending months to get the right drum and guitar sound for each track. It's the mark of a true craftsman that for all it's intensive production and the large cast of guests, BLUE MOON SWAMP still sounds like Fogerty just ambled into the studio with a few pals and laid it all down.
While there are a few stylistic diversions, like the Tex-Mex-flavored "Bring It Down To Jelly Roll," the bulk of the material ...
