Illustrator: Craig Howell. The title of Staind's sophomore album refers to the misery passed on from generation to generation; specifically, singer Aaron Lewis' family issues. And Break the Cycle is an issues album -- Lewis' therapy session for all to hear. "For You" reads like a final confession from child to parent ("I am f*cked up because you are"), and on the hit single "It's Been Awhile," he sings, "I cannot blame this on my father." Staind wraps up all this pain in deceivingly melodic packages, sort of like Nirvana's "All Apologies" without the depth. Lewis has a Kurt Cobain-like ache to his voice, which makes the more affecting songs -- like the acoustic version of "Outside" -- genuine (or at least appear that way). Cycle is ultimately no more than 50 minutes of standard-issue desolation, but the softness of many of the tracks gives it compassion, something most of Staind's peers have no time for. ~ Michael Gallucci Most modern hard rock bands miss the mark by over-emphasizing great riffs and neglecting the importance of complementary vocals. Luckily, such is not the case with Staind, who owe some nods to Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst for career guidance. Durst encouraged vocalist Aaron Lewis to sing more and scream less, which proved to be a key factor in the band's development. The appeal of Staind lies in the purity and fierce emotional integrity of their music, traits seldom seen in heavy rock since Suicidal Tendencies and Pantera ruled the roost. Lewis's moonlighting as a solo acoustic performer in the band's lean years serves Staind well as BREAK THE CYCLE boasts a well balanced set of thrashy material ("Open Your Eyes" and "Safe Place") offset by more gentle rock ballads ("Fade" and "Suffer"). It is the impact of those ballads that sets Staind apart from their new-metal brethren. The radio-bound "It's Been Awhile" and full-band treatment of "Outside" strike universal chords, effectively capturing the bitterness of regret and facing reality with brooding hopefulness.
Rolling Stone (6/7/01, p.112) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "...Misery rock's most song-oriented, downright sensitive band in years....they don't need to split eardrums to open hearts..." CMJ (6/4/01, p.19) - "...Staind have claimed an even firmer grip on its moody rock crown with this album..." Staind Break The Cycle Songs Break The Cycle Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Too bad there aren't more stars... Never has there been an album that has made such an enormous impact in my life as Break the Cycle. I was only 14 when I first heard It's Been Awhile on tv. It was Aaron Lewis' tender voice that hooked me automatically. I had to go buy the CD. Upon first listening, I fell in love with the softer side, Epiphany and Outside specifically. I became a bigger and bigger fan the more I've listened to it. It convinced me to listen to their other albums, like the intense, raw Tormented and the revolutionary Dysfunction. And later the highly reminiscent 14 Shades of Grey and the groundbreaking Chapter V kept me going.
Over these years Staind, specifically Break the Cycle, has helped me through some really hard times. When I'm having a good day it makes me even happier. And when I'm having a bad day, the heavy, hard tracks help me get out my frustrations.
Needless to say, when I finally heard Staind perform some of these songs last summer, especially Epiphany, it was very emotional. It was probably the happiest I've ever been.
I admit that Staind's emotional, hearlfelt lyrics and face melting music aren't for everybody, but if you like strong poetics with a little anger and hatred mixed in, Break the Cycle (and all other Staind albums) would be perfect! Excellent This album offers great representation of life at the moment, especialy the tragedy and how society has changed and the roads people are taking.
The artists are expressing their individual feelings.. i love it. Emotional and beautiful. Meaning, this music is full of meaning. They are probably tapping into a lot of people who are feeling this same way... So AWESOME WORK STAIND!!! KEEP IT UP!!!! Staind really does Break The Cycle Break The Cycle, Staind's third offering, is by far one of the best albums I have ever purchased. Some have dismissed the album after hearing its lead single, It's Beem A While. But, if those same idviduals would actually take the time to listen to the album, and more importantly, understand it, then I am sure that they would have a completely different opinion. It would be at that point that they would see that Staind covers nearly every emotion on thier albums. Sad to happy, anger to agression - Staind can do it all. So, pick up this album and treat yourself to an awesome music expierence. Submitted by X X X (Brooklyn, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A combo of rock and ballads The mix of metal and ballads make this cd one that I listen to regularly. The radio hit balladS are classic and the harder songs are realy good. Lyrically better than Dysfuction but not as raw. A great breakup album. Submitted by Sassy Angel (Howell, NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
