No liner notes, no explanation, little rhyme or reason behind what songs made Rhino's VH1 The Big 80s: Pop and what was left behind. No matter -- the songs that made the cut are very good, very entertaining indeed. For the most part, this follows the standard pattern of new wave compilations, with such ringers as the Beach Boys' "Kokomo" and Loverboy's "Turn Me Loose" thrown in for good measure. Then, there are the songs from artists who usually show up on these kind of collections, but are represented by interesting selections -- Tears for Fears with "Sowing the Seeds of Love," Cutting Crew with "I've Been in Love Before," Rick Springfield with "I've Done Everything for You" -- plus selections like Julian Lennon's "Too Late for Goodbyes," which should appear frequently on these compilations, but doesn't. So, there are probably enough unconventional choices to keep this disc interesting, but it's still fairly predictable new wave/early-'80s material. Still, it isn't bad in that regard, and if you're looking for a bunch of the songs on this collection, this is a good choice. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

VH1: The Big 80'S: Pop!
$25.19 JOHN LENNON PLASTIC ONO BAND came out at the same time as an album by Lennon's wife Yoko Ono (also titled PLASTIC ONO BAND).
John Lennon's 1970 official solo debut is as remarkable for its startling contrast to the Beatles as it is for the passion and force of its songwriting. Stripped-down, gripping, and emotionally resonant, PLASTIC ONO BAND has little to do with the hook-heavy pop of his early Beatles work, or the psychedelic, word-salad approach of his songs on SGT PEPPER'S LONELY HEART'S CLUB BAND and ABBEY ROAD. Instead, this is an album of intensely confessional songs that lay bare the personal demons Lennon was trying to exorcise at the time--the ghosts of fame, family, faith, and individual identity, among them.
The sound of the album is straightforward and hard-hitting. Spare, lean rock arrangements with piano, drums, bass, and guitar frame the songs effectively, letting Lennon's narratives carry the weight. The songs are shot through with bitterness ("I Found Out"), disillusionment ("God"), and regret ("Mother"), but there are also moments of hope in "Hold On" and the achingly beautiful "Love," which ranks alongside the very best of Lennon's ballads. Lennon was undergoing primal scream therapy during these sessions and the results can be heard, overtly (the strained vocals of "Well, Well, Well"), and in the rage and anguish of his harrowingly honest songwriting. This is one of the finest singer/songwriter albums of this or any era.
Contained within is an audiophile gold disc rendering of John Lennon's self-titled John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band (1970). The ...

VH1: The Big 80'S: Pop!
$11.65 Following an over five-year hiatus from their pop music careers, an eternity in today's mercurial music frenzy, All Saints members Shaznay Lewis, Melanie Blatt, Nicole Appleton, and Natalie Appleton needed to make a big splash on the scene in order to recapture the success they garnered from their 1997 self-titled sampling. However, the slow pop grooves that launched their careers in 1997 were not going to cut it some ten years later. Therefore, on Studio 1, the third album by the quartet, All Saints shifted away from the music style that nostalgically kept them as has-beens. On Studio 1, listeners hear a more spurred dance version of the Saints, who've shifted their music to R&B, yet overlay it in striking layers of electric pop. The results are strong; the galactic rhythm and blues is a lovely sound from the four girls, who, like Pop Rocks candy, jump and bounce with sweet beats that suit both radio and club dancefloors. Radio hits like "Rock Steady" and "Chick Fit" are solid dance hits, with enticing grooves and kicking tracks. The girls also slow it down impressively, with melodic slow-moving cuts like "Fundamental" and "One Me and U." Unfortunately, while all the music is appealing, it lacks personality and character. The tracks, all composed by Shaznay Lewis and Greg Kurstin, bear no emotional value, and the girls' voices are indistinguishable from one another and digitally enhanced to the point of obscurity. Like a giant corporate birthday gateau, the music is all frosting, no cake, and it borders on sickly. There is no sign of the All Saints from ten years ago, who used to be bona fide pop stars who could actually pen a tune ...
