Like many East Coast hardcore/metal bands, Ensign mean well. Fighting the good fight for individualism, nonconformity, and the spirit of hardcore, their cause is certainly noble. The problem is, most of their colleagues are doing exactly the same thing, which suggests a certain kind of conformity in itself. The Price of Progression offers 17 blasts of full-tilt hardcore (played with the precision of speed metal), with the usual shouted vocals and caustic mantras about questioning authority and starting revolutions. Unfortunately, Ensign aren't starting any revolutions themselves, but merely holding up well-worn conventions -- which may be just fine for die-hard fans of the genre, but those looking for something truly radical should go elsewhere. ~ Andy Hinds

Price Of Progression music CDs
$11.35 The title of this most unusual compilation only hints at what's really on this CD, so let's spell it out: it's the sounds of women (and, only occasionally, both women and men) having -- or at least emulating -- having sex, and it is set to an extraordinary variety of musical backings. All of these 21 tracks were recorded in the 1960s (probably the late 1960s) and 1970s, but more details aren't on tape, due not only to the absence of all but the most perfunctory liner notes, but also to the total lack of artist credits for any of the selections (though song titles are given). An educated guess would surmise that some of this stuff was used in sexploitation movie soundtracks, and much of the rest in obscure exploitation albums that you could only buy in adult entertainment stores or the "other" section of conventional record shops. So ...

Price Of Progression CD music
$12.79 In a refreshing change of pace, Think About Life may be the first Canadian indie sensation with no connection to Broken Social Scene, the New Pornographers, or Arcade Fire. Think About Life don't exist in a vacuum -- their press release makes early note of the band's friendship with Wolf Parade, and lead singer Martin Cesar has been in a succession of minor Montreal acts -- but they're not moody experimentalists, smart-alecky power poppers, or anthemic alterna-rockers, which means the trend-hungry music press may have trouble slotting them into the existing Canadian musical power structure. The trio members don't make it easy for themselves on their self-titled debut, either. There are 11 songs on Think About Life, the majority of them just either side of three minutes long and all of them built on the same basic elements: Cesar's dramatic, occasionally hectoring vocals; Graham Van Pelt's high-register keyboard drones; and Matt Shane's clattering drums. Van Pelt's organ parts have the Farfisa cheesiness of the classic new wave era, but the songs are (thankfully) not attempting historical accuracy. Despite the prominence of Shane's drum tracks, the songs aren't danceable ...
