Rhino/Elektra Tradition's The Very Best of Shirley Murdock is an excellent 16-track retrospective of her recordings for Elektra in the late '80s. This contains seven of the nine songs on her eponymous debut (or eight of 13, if you count the remixes on the record, one of which is here [the "midnight mix" of "As We Lay"]), three songs from her second album, A Woman's Point of View," and three from her third record, Let There Be Love. For good measure, "Computer Love," the Zapp song she sang on and co-wrote, is also here, along with an extended mix of "Go On Without You" from a promotional 12-inch single. All of this is tied together by classy packaging and fine notes by David Nathan, making this a fine overview of her hit-making peak. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Yet Another... Brilliant singer that has been shut out of the industry. When I listen to these old songs I'm reminded of other similar singers from her era like Miki Howard and Jody Watley. Oh well at least Shirley's R&B material is still available. This is the best collection of her work that I've seen so far. My favorites here are "Husband", "Go On Without You", and the quiet storm standard "As We Lay". Also a song I hadn't heard before comes to the fore also, "The One I Need". This is a worthy addition to any R&B lover’s collection for sure. I see that she is doing gospel now, hmmm... I'll have to check some of those efforts out to see if this brilliant voice has been realized on that front. Submitted by Marcusj_j (Aurora, IL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A superb singer I was glad to see they finally put together a best of compilation of Shirley's work, and she sure sounds as refreshing as ever. I am a little disappointed that rather than adding more songs to the album they re-added 'As we lay' and 'wirhout you. Other than that this is a worthwhile buy.
