This long-awaited two-disc set features all of Garland's jazz sides for Columbia Records between 1959-1960, including the complete albums Velvet Guitar, The Unforgettable Guitar of Hank Garland, and Jazz Winds From a New Direction. Although it may seem a bit quaint, in its time Jazz Winds was a revelatory performance; previously, it was almost impossible to believe that a country guitarist could attack jazz lines with this much imagination and finesse, even taking into account what Chet Atkins had already accomplished. Also surprising was the fact that Jazz Winds wasn't commercial or countrified in any way; it was marketed as a straight jazz album, played by a real jazz quartet that included Joe Morello (drums), Joe Benjamin (bass), and vibraphonist Gary Burton in his debut recording. However, even if that album caused all the fuss, there's terrific playing scattered throughout the other two, whether it's the cleverly titled "Call D. Law," the hard-swinging Garland original "Why Not?," or lovely takes on "Scarlet Ribbons" and "Polka Dots and Moonbeams." These sessions have become legendary in guitar circles, and the fact that most of them have been out of print for decades makes this reissue a real treasure for Garland fans. ~ Jim Smith

Nashville steel guitarist Hank Garland turned the jazz world on its ear in the late 50's with three landmark albums for Columbia. Move! collects every track from these sessions, including the entire Jazz Winds From A New Direction album and 4 previously unissued tracks on 2 CD's. 31 tracks. 2 CD's in a double slimline jewelbox.

All tracks have been digitally remastered.Down Beat (1/02, pp.75-6) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "...The operative word here is pleasant..."

3 stars Hank Garland Remembered
I had heard of Hank Garland but never heard any of his music until now. This compilation is a good place to start. Timeless jazz standards with wonderful soloing over the changes. Well worth the purchase.

3 stars Elvis's quitarist deserves a listen
I don't have this album yet but plan to get it. Ever heard Elvis Presley's "Little Sister" or "His Latest Flame"? Well...that's Hank playing lead quitar for Elvis's classic early 1960's recording. This disc deserves a listen!

Recorded between 1955 & 1990. Includes liner notes by Ken Druker. The Definitive Joe Williams takes a look back at the illustrious career of one of the greatest singers in the history of music. The 19 tracks are drawn from his two stints recording for Verve and his prolific stay with Roulette. The CD kicks off with four tracks from the great Count Basie Swings, Joe Williams Sings record from 1955 including spectacular versions of "Every Day I Have the Blues" and "All Right, Okay, You Win" that leave no doubt in the listener's mind that Joe Williams could swing until the cows, chickens, and even ducks came home. Two songs, one of which is the rockingest version of "Singin' in the Rain" you'll likely ever hear, from the follow-up record from 1956, The Greatest! Count Basie Plays, Joe Williams Sings Standards, are next, followed by a duet with Ella Fitzgerald. They both show off their prodigious scat talents, and Ella wins the duel but only just. Williams left Basie in the late '50s and signed with Roulette. His music still had tons of swing, but he also delved into pop songs and lush balladry. Tracks like 1958's "If I Could Be With You One Hour Tonight" demonstrate the tender side of Williams, romantic but not mushy, nothing but perfect love songs. His trumpet man of choice was Harry "Sweets" Edison on many of his Roulette dates: four of the tracks collected here feature Edison's sweet tone. After a heartstring-tugging take on Ellington's "Come Sunday" with the Mel Lewis/Thad Jones big band recorded in 1966, the CD has ...
