Like Renny Harlin's relentless picture, the soundtrack Driven tries its hardest to appeal to all audiences. There's neo-metal for the headbangers, contemporary country and pop for the racing wives, mild techno for the hip racing fans, blues-rock for the bikers, and redneck country for the rednecks. Such shameless audience pandering worked in the film, since that was the point -- and it was very funny to see Harlin and his star/screenwriter/producer Sylvester Stallone trying to cover all their bases, including stilted European racers designed for the international market. On record, it's way too diffused, and its wide stylistic reach means that only a handful of cuts make an impression (including Doyle Bramhall's Jimi Hendrix salute "Green Light Girl," Hank Williams III's rampaging "Hang On"). As a souvenir, perhaps it works, but really if you want to be reminded of Driven, you should just watch the movie again, since this can't come close to capturing the glorious trash Harlin conjured. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine For a fast-paced film about drag racing, you might expect a soundtrack filled with speed-crazed metal or industrial music. While there are a couple of thrashing, heavy rockers on this disc (Tantric's "Breakdown," "Poison Well" by Insolence), the DRIVEN soundtrack mixes things up admirably and unexpectedly by including a generous amount of contemporary country music and eclectic pop-rock. Country ballads from some of Nashville's superstars (Tim McGraw, LeAnn Rimes) and some zesty cowpunk from Hank Williams's grandson Hank III rub shoulders with Rare Blend's version of the oft-sampled O'Jays classic "For the Love of Money" and Doyle Bramhall II's blazing, old-school blues-rocker "Green Light Girl." If you want to know how this all fits together, go see the movie.

| | Youngbloods Euphoria 1965-1969 CD (1998) (Import) Australia
Driven Soundtrack
$19.99 Definitive Collection Of Famed 60's Band Featuring Jessie Colin Young.
The Youngbloods: Jesse Colin Young, Jerry Corbit, Banana, Joe Bauer. Contains 25 tracks. Liner Note Author: Glenn A. Baker. This Australian import chronologically gathers over two dozen tracks from '60s folk-rockers the Youngbloods. Euphoria 1965-1969 opens up with four Jesse Colin Young compositions that feature the original quartet of Young (guitar/bass/vocals), Jerry Corbitt (bass), Lowell Levinger (keyboards), and Joe Bauer (drums). The tracks "Another Strange Town," "Hey Babe," "Sometimes," and "Rider" were cut and released under a deal that Young had with Mercury Records, eventually surfacing on Two Trips With Jesse Colin Young (1968). The remainder of this disc is amply divided among highlights from the Youngbloods' self-titled debut LP (1967) -- including the rare 45 rpm-only track "Merry Go Round" -- as well as Earth Music (1967) and Elephant Mountain (1969). There is a notable evolution in the band's sound, which was greatly informed by Young and Corbitt's East Coast folky roots. This turned up on early tracks such as "Grizzly Bear" and their straight-ahead, driving, up-tempo cover of "Statesboro Blues." Both contain a carefree jug band sensibility akin to what the Lovin' Spoonful and Blues Project had also been doing. The heavily distorted electric ...
