European copyright law, which places recordings over 50 years old in the public domain, has caused a flood of cheap, low-quality reissues of the work of the major recording artists of the first half of the 20th century. But, in addition to the bottom-feeders, there are a few reputable record labels that use their free access to vintage recordings to put together superior packages, and one of these is Jasmine, which is responsible for this collection, a four-CD, 101-track box set running nearly five hours, the most comprehensive collection of Dick Haymes recordings yet released. Producer/annotator Geoff Milne estimates that Decca Records released 250+ titles by Haymes on singles in the 1940s and '50s, and 91 of them are here, including all 27 of the singer's Top Ten hits. Also featured are four tracks he made as the singer in Harry James' orchestra in 1941 and six airchecks from his various radio shows. The tracks are in chronological order by recording date, with the exception of "Adieu," which was placed at the end as a send-off. This Japanese edition of progressive rock group Renaissance's 1974 album TURN OF THE CARDS comes in an LP-style sleeve. The third album by this incarnation of Renaissance was a match for their previous success, Ashes Are Burning, with equally impressive performances and songwriting and a few new musical twists added. The songs here fit more easily into a rock vein, and the prior album's folk influences are gone. Turn of the Cards rocks a bit harder, albeit always in a progressive rock manner, and Jon Camp's bass and Terence Sullivan's drums are both harder and heavier here, the bass (the group's only amplified instrument) in particular much more forward in the mix. We've come a long way in the world of a cappella music since the barbershop quartets and even from the doo wop groups. Todd Rundgren's 1985 album A Cappella demonstrated that modern recording technology could make the human voice sound like any instrument, and the hip-hop movement, with its "human beat boxes," brought us vocalists using nothing more than a microphone who could re-create a variety of percussive sounds. The contemporary vocal group, then, has a lot of possibilities as well as challenges, and Orlando, FL based quintet Toxic Audio, which has absorbed recent influences, is not your grandfather's, or even your father's, a cappella group. After a year of Disney theme-park work, they found greater exposure by spending six months of 2004 in an Off-Broadway theater doing eight shows a week, and earned a Drama Desk Award for their trouble. They also attracted the attention of show music record label DRG Records, which has issued this album, compiling tracks from two of their three previous self-released efforts and adding four newly recorded tracks. The group clearly has spent time listening to the Manhattan Transfer, and they are not shy about throwing jazz elements into arrangements of such standards as "Route 66." But they also honor the novelty tradition of a cappella with self-written comic numbers like "Caffeine" and "Putting Words in My Mouth." And they have an eclectic sense of current music that allows them to try on not only the Broadway show tune "You Can't Stop the Beat" from the musical Hairspray, but also the hard rock Evanescence hit "Bring Me to Life." The effect of hearing such unusual choices is not unlike hearing a marching band break into a disco song, of course; it's simultaneously funny and enlightening.
