Evergreens album
$12.09 The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing debut would expect. No, it's the sound of the record: immediate, forceful, crystalline; it's in-your-face compelling and impossible to ignore. 11:11 features 11 new compositions, dedicated to 11 musical artists (not all guitarists, either) who have had an influence on the duo. Recorded in Ixtapa, Mexico, the set was self-produced with the ...

Evergreens CD music
$20.44 The U.K. label Soundway Records has vaulted itself to the head of the pack within the narrow field of African anthologies. They specialize in hard '60s and '70s funk, disco, and rock from West Africa, as heard on their Nigeria Special series as well as the earlier AFRO BABY and GHANA SOUNDZ sets, not to mention a disc devoted to the best-of Nigerian singer-guitarist Sir Victor ...

| | Spring Heel Jack Treader CD (1999)
Evergreens songs
$14.65 Is TREADER drum-and-bass? Sort of. That opening blast of overlaid orchestral samples has less in common with Goldie or Roni Size than it does with Krzysztof Penderecki and Gyorgy Ligeti. Who? If you know that bizarre choral and orchestral music heard in The Shining and 2001, hold these European composers responsible. In any case, TREADER is drum-and-bas. There are plenty of deep beats and thick grooves. It's just that Spring Heel Jack is determined to push the genre as far as it will go. And, in some places on this disc, SHJ succeeds in pushing it right over the edge.
The title track sounds like it's lifted straight outta the percussion-ensemble work of George Crumb (who, for all we know, could be sampled here). And SHJ's de-constructions of Rodgers and Hammerstein's timeless songs will probably appeal most to fans of John Oswald's Plunderphonics, ...

$31.89 The Original Album Classics series by Song/BMG in Germany is an attempt to clear shelves of catalog titles that are lying about, but it inadvertently provides a great opportunity to those who have developed a sincere interest in a band via a greatest-hits comp but have yet to score any actual titles. These budget-priced, completely remastered collections feature full-length album classics -- in this case five studio albums by the Blue Öyster Cult from their eponymously titled Columbia debut through to Tyranny and Mutation, Secret Treaties, Agents of Fortune, and Mirrors -- unfortunately, the live classic On Your Feet or On Your Knees isn't included, nor is Spectres. Mirrors is strictly crap, but everything else here does rock. These discs are the remastered versions and all contain bonus material wherever possible. Again, this should have been a consecutive set, but four of these five albums are indispensable if you don't already have them. You can use Mirrors as a coaster. ~ Thom Jurek
