With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. Principally recorded at Bias, Sprigfield, Virginia; Lighthouse, Brentt Truitts, Nashville, Tennessee; Riverside Audio, Mount Gilead, North Carolina. Bluegrass guitarist Mark Newton undertook quite a project when he assembled his 2000 album Follow Me Back to the Fold by calling together some of the most talented women in bluegrass and showcasing many of their compositions on a single CD. Festival stalwarts Rhonda Vincent, Lynn Morris, and the Whites anchor some of the lesser-known newcomers like Valerie Smith and Sally Jones, making for an interesting blend of familiar and new voices. Newton assembled a top-notch band, including Tony Rice, Alan Bibey, Ronnie Stewart, Fred Travers, and (naturally) two female instrumentalists, Missy Raines on bass and Kristin Scott playing banjo. These seasoned studio and touring musicians lay down a clean backdrop for the guest vocalists to work over top of, each adding subtle nuances and their own personal style to their respective tracks. The gentle "A Child Again" is a quiet duet featuring warm and intimate vocals from Cathy Chiavola, while Lynn Morris' "Never Looking Back" rips and rolls along on a more boisterous path. One hundred-two years after the publication of the Maple Leaf Rag, ragtime's distinction as America's first popular music is undisputed, as is the genius and vision of Scott Joplin, its greatest composer and most dedicated proponent. The "weird and intoxicating effect" of the music Joplin largely shaped had a decidedly multi-ethnic appeal that broke through racial barriers and quickly captured the imagination, spirit and enthusiasm of its generation. Though American music has undergone numerous transformations since the ragtime era, ragtime has never gone away. Today, its spirit lives on, in the many ragtime clubs, societies, festivals and concerts across the country, and through the contributions of new composers like Californian Ron Ross.

In Ragtime Renaissance, Ron builds on the traditions of the ragtime form and infuses it with his 21st century sensibility, full of inventiveness, wit, romanticism, charm and rhythmic vitality.

By day a stockbroker, Ron is a life-long musician and composer. Born in Detroit, he began formal schooling on the piano when he was only five. By his 13th birthday, his ear had already developed to the point where he could take songs he listened to on the radio and reconstruct them on the piano without the aid of sheet music. Soon after, he started writing his own pieces and eventually left formal training. In the intervening years, Ron continued to foster his gift for composing. A self-described musical chameleon, he's absorbed and written in a variety of styles along the way. His compositional portfolio includes pop tunes, folk, country, comedy and movie music.
