| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Truckin' Favorites songs
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of ...
| | Brad Paisley American Saturday Night CD (2009)
Truckin' Favorites album
$12.19 An American saturday night is not an unusual topic for a country song but Brad Paisley's celebration is. Paisley sees a typical weekend night as a cultural collision of French kisses, Italian Ices, Canadian bacon and margaritas, a place where Mexican and Dutch beers chill side by side in a bucket of ice. If he leans too heavily on labels, referring to those beers by brand name, it's merely a reflection of Paisley's uncanny knack for capturing the casual contemporary details of American life at the tail end of the 2000s. It's not just the pile up of iPhones and international video chats on "Welcome to the Future," the first country ...
| | Nina Simone Baltimore CD (1978)
Truckin' Favorites CD music
$9.79 The seeds for BALTIMORE were sown when producer Creed Taylor approached the legendary Nina Simone after her 1977 appearance at London's Drury Lane Theater with the idea of recording an album for his CTI record label. At this point Simone had ended her seven-year association with RCA Records and hadn't made a studio album in almost four years. The results of this 1978 release, mostly recorded in Brussels, are slightly production-heavy yet never less than charming; there's an 18-piece string section (overdubbed in New York), and a small choir, in addition to the band.
Though the choice of material is somewhat puzzling, including versions of Hall and Oates' "Rich Girl" and the country song "The Family" (Simone claimed to have little part in the selection), the album boasts a few spellbinding cuts, including a moving version of Judy Collins' nostalgic song "My Father." There's also a powerful performance of Bernard Ighner's "Everything Must Change," as well as an intense interpretation of the Randy Newman title song.
CTI Master Series remastered reissue of 1978 album for one of the few performers who can bridge the artistic gap between pop & jazz, funk & ...

Truckin' Favorites CD music
$8.49 Martina McBride is one of the most reliable female performers in country music. Her bright, sunny twang-filled albums have been appearing on the charts since she first arrived on the scene in 1992. On her ninth studio album, WAKING UP LAUGHING, McBride continues to mine a slick, honky-tonk-tinged pop vibe that expertly splits the difference between commercial anthems ("How I Feel") and slightly ...
