This was Blood, Sweat & Tears' apex, and a testimony to the best of the jazz/rock movement. Created by the legendary Al Kooper, the band was one of the major movers in the late-1960s rock scene. Though Kooper had departed after the debut album, this follow-up is bold, brassy, and adventurous, and the arrival of David Clayton-Thomas gave the band a strong singer and focal point. Eclecticism abounds, as an interpretation of an Eric Satie composition is followed by a version of Traffic's "Smiling Phases." Hit singles galore were culled from this record--"Spinning Wheel," "You've Made Me So Very Happy," and "And When I Die,"--not to mention a superb ...
| | Revere, Paul & The Raiders Alias Pink Puzz CD (1969)
Greatest Hits CD music
$11.95 The title was a reference to the band's ruse of submitting a new record to an L.A. radio station under the alias and earning airplay until it was discovered that "Pink Puzz" was really Paul Revere & the Raiders. That was the Raiders' dilemma -- they could still get attention for their singles, such as the Top 40 rocker "Let Me!" that led off this collection, but hip FM radio didn't want to know. Actually, since Mark Lindsay's muse was taking him in a pop-swamp rock direction not far removed from what Elvis Presley was doing at the time, maybe that made sense. Lindsay's increasingly autobiographical material concerned itself with the pleasures and travails of being a rock star on the road, and though he could bring conviction to such material, singing about the dilemma of missing his limo can't have endeared him to his fans. As it was, Alias Pink Puzz charted higher than any Raiders album in two years, but stayed in the charts fewer weeks than any since 1965. Maybe what they needed to do was change their name for real...~ William Ruhlmann

| | Paul Simon Collection: On My Way, Don't Know Where I'm Goin' CD (2002) Limited Edition
Greatest Hits music CDs
$10.89 Recorded between 1972 & 2002. Includes liner notes by David Wild.
What's that? You ask how ON MY WAY differs from the other Paul Simon collection NEGOTIATIONS & LOVE SONGS? Well, for one thing the ensuing 14 years since the initial release of the latter gives this disc a considerable advantage by allowing for the inclusion of material from the Brazilian-inflected THE RHYTHM OF THE SAINTS and the similarly pancultural-sounding YOU'RE THE ONE, two of the finest albums in Simon's catalog. Naturally, as on NEGOTIATIONS, all the bases of Simon's '70s hits ("Kodachrome," "Loves Me Like a Rock," etc.) are covered, but there's also a bonus disc of previously unreleased live material. Even the much-maligned CAPEMAN project gets a fair hearing on this collection ...
| | Chicago VIII CD (1975) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Greatest Hits songs
$6.49 Road-weary and running low on steam, the members of Chicago began tinkering with their formula on the nostalgic Chicago VIII. Robert Lamm continued to loosen his grip on the songwriting, allowing Peter Cetera, Terry Kath, and James Pankow to pen the majority of the album. The enthusiasm and drive that the band had displayed on their previous efforts was audibly escaping them, best exemplified by the lazy drawl that Cetera affects on his otherwise rocking "Anyway You Want." Finally, the jazz tinges continued to appear less and less, replaced by a brassy R&B approach that provides a more rigid structure for their tunes. But these factors don't necessarily count against the band, as many songs have a lazy, late-afternoon feel that provides a few feel-good moments. Pankow's "Brand New Love Affair -- Part I & II" is a smooth, light rock ballad that Terry Kath wraps his soulful voice around, transforming it into a brooding lament on lost ...

| | Suzy Bogguss Voices In The Wind CD (1992)
Greatest Hits music CDs
$11.65 This sounded like one of those white-bread pop albums folks occasionally try to pawn off as country -- until you started listening to the lyrics. Voices in the Wind may have been bigger on string sections than twin fiddlers, but Bogguss' choice in covers remained just off-center enough to be exciting, with Cheryl Wheeler's "Don't Wanna" and Lowell George's "Heartache." She revived John Hiatt's "Drive South" for a hit. The more risky material -- especially the bleary-eyed blues of "Eat at Joe's" and the troubled alcoholic haze of Bogguss' own "In the Day" -- shows why the Country Music Association gave ...
