April Wine (like any good wine) got better with age, and the Canadians' brightest moment only arrived over a decade into their career with 1981's The Nature of the Beast. Opener "All Over Town" lurches into action on a lopsided riff before finding its awesome groove, -- a groove they seldom abandon through and to the end of the disc. All-around frontman Myles Goodwyn is in top form, leading the band through some of their most aggressive material ever ("Bad Boys," "Crash and Burn"), as well as through the band's career-defining power ballad "Just Between You and Me." While "Caught in the Crossfire" and "Future Tense" suffer from some cheesy sci-fi lyrics, melodic hard rockers such as "Big City Girls," "One More Time," and "Sign of the Gypsy Queen" (featuring Thin Lizzy-like dual guitar harmonies) pick up the slack in spades. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| | April Wine Classic Masters CD (2002) Remastered
Nature Of The Beast
$5.15 Recorded between 1978 & 1985. Includes liner notes by Gerri Miller.
Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Robert Vosgien (Capitol Mastering).
The April Wine entry in Capitol Records' midline-priced Classic Masters series is a reasonable best-of culled from the group's tenure at Capitol from the late '70s to the mid-'80s. It includes all six of the band's U.S. singles chart entries between 1979 and 1984, "Roller," "I Like to Rock," "Just Between You and Me," "Sign of the Gypsy Queen," "Enough Is Enough," and "This Could Be the Right One." (Of course, the 1972 Top 40 hit "You Could Have Been a Lady," released in the U.S. on Big Tree Records, is not included, nor are any of April Wine's pre- or post-Capitol recordings.) The collection is weakened by the compiler's decision to fill out the rest of the disc by including tracks from all six of the Capitol studio albums, even the commercially negligible contractual-obligation LP Walking Through Fire, and to balance the choices among them; there are only two selections from million-selling ...
| | Gamma 2 CD (1980)
Nature Of The Beast
$9.69 The second LP from Gamma, an unlikely hard rock group on Elektra Records, features future Robin Trower vocalist Davey Pattison doing his best to sound like Bad Company during Paul Rodgers' "Rock & Roll Fantasy" period. With Jim Alcivar on synthesizer and Denny Carmassi on drums, you have a goodly portion of the band Montrose, since the guitarist/producer is the guiding hand behind this project. "Skin and Bone" might as well be Bad Company, while the cover of Thunderclap Newman's "Something in the Air" misses the mark slightly. The revolutionary theme of that great tune from the film The Strawberry Statement gets lost in the translation and doesn't have Pete Townshend's clever production. Though the attempt is interesting enough, memories of the original are so strong that this version is a bit of a letdown, the risk of treading on hallowed ground snagging the group here. Ronnie Montrose, Alcivar, and Pattison combine to write the leadoff track, "Mean Streak," which distorts the "Jumpin' Jack Flash riff just ...
| | Gamma 1 CD (1979)
Nature Of The Beast
$9.69 For Gamma's debut on Elektra, the band picked Mickey Newbury's "Wish I Was" and Hollies/Linda Ronstadt songwriter Clint Ballard Jr.'s "I'm Alive," when maybe Newbury's "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" would have been more appropriate. As far as Ballard's contribution goes, the more familiar "You're No Good" might've worked better than "I'm Alive," creativity not being Gamma's strong suit. With such a cool name as Gamma, the rays that turned Bruce Banner into the Hulk, one might expect Ronnie Montrose to come up with a nice mutated blend of hard-edged Pink Floyd meets Hawkwind. No such luck. The opening track, "Thunder and Lightning," has all the pedestrian elements of a marriage between Foreigner and Bad Company, the mainstream meets the mundane. Ken Scott's production work leaves empty spaces in between the guitar crunch and the keyboard fills, with the work feeling unfinished or rushed. The Hollies' "I'm Alive" is better suited to that ...
