As suggested by its title, Harder...Faster sees veteran Canadian rockers April Wine taking things up a notch with relentless slabs of hard rock in "I Like to Rock" and "Ladies Man." Also on hand is a memorable cool groover called "Say Hello," a curious cover of King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man," and the dual personality of "Tonite," which alternates between quiet balladry and all-out riffing. Band leader Myles Goodwyn even relinquishes the spotlight in a rare show of democracy to second guitarist Brian Greenway on the impressive "Before the Dawn." Ultimately, this is a consistently strong album which sets the stage for what would be April Wine's best effort, the following year's The Nature of the Beast. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
April Wine: Myles Goodwyn, Steve Lang, Gary Moffet, Brian Greenway, Jerry Mercer. Harder Faster Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Canadian Rock of The 80's I listened to April Wine while in high school and college. It's good, basic rock & roll from Canada. The "Nature of the Beast" album was the most successful, but their first release is the least commercial material.
I always recommend that if you can listen to the music first, that's the best way to judge before you buy on-line. Submitted by a reviewer (Dallas, TX, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Aril Wine Rocks!!!! Believe or not, I 1st had this recording on cassette tape. Does anyone remember cassette tape? It still ROCKS! I saw them live in the early 80's. What an awsome band. I'm glad to hear the are still rockin. A 5 Submitted by andrew (Chandler, AZ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Nothing New, But Definitely Improved Follows the 70's blueprint for hard rock. This album would be unremarkable if not for the great harmony work the band puts in. Has some great classic moments...who out there doesn't remember "journey to the stars..rock n' roll guitars" (plus the guitar licks from The Beatles "Day Tripper" from "I Like To Rock"? Another high point is "20th Century Schizoid Man". April Wine does this one about as well as King Crimson ever did, and that's saying something. I personally prefer their later work, especially "The Nature of the Beast" and "Walking Through Fire", but this is a good solid piece of work. $12.79 Multi-instrumentalist/producer/engineer Billy Sherwood is known for his work with progressive rock bands such as Yes and World Trade. Essentially, he wears many hats. Here, Sherwood teams with legendary Yes bassist Chris Squire and others for the duo's second recorded collaboration. Ultimately, the musicians cultivate a broad studio sound, complete with phased voices, hard-hitting rhythms, swirling keyboard treatments, and more. They do draw a few parallels to Yes via their softly expressed vocal harmonies, although this recording suffers from a distinct sense of invariability, partly due to a glut of indistinctive compositions. However, the piece titled "The Wheel" is a slow moving yet powerfully stated dirge, awash with sinuous guitar licks and a big wall-of-sound backdrop. There are some choice moments where ...
| | Juana Molina Tres Cosas CD (2004)
Harder Faster
$11.55 Welcome to Juana Molina's world. It's a place of friendly funhouse mirrors, where reality stretches or contracts, where sounds whisper rather than assault, and melodies linger on the air. Sounding not a million miles from Lisa Germano fronting a muted Stereolab, it's also like a walk through a spring afternoon, where the sun is pleasant and not too ...
| | Grails Burning Off Impurities CD (2007)
Harder Faster
$13.85 When the Grails released the compendium of their Black Tar Prophecies EPs in a single-CD volume -- two had previously been issued on vinyl only, the third was released only as part of the collection -- they found themselves exploring new and varied sonic territory. They moved away from the early post-rock schematics that had landed them in a seemingly inescapable sonic furrow. Black Tar Prophecies was their strongest recording to date. Hot on its heels, just months later, comes this behemoth of swirling, free-floating, mysterious psychedelia but it certainly doesn't end there. Elements of Eastern modal folk music, improvisational and African polyrythms, ambient soundscapes and layered textures of various "other" instruments such as guest Dylan Rice-Leary's harmonica, Cory Gray's baritone horn, and Kate O'Brien's violin add to the free-for-all while the Grails contribute enough of their own strangeness. Skin man and main keyboardist Emil Amos (who worked with Jandek as a drummer for a minute and became half of the Om duo) also plays melodica, guitarist Zak Riles -- who is part of M. Ward's band as well -- plays oud, banjo and pedal steel, bassist William Slater also plays keys (Rhodes, harpsichord), and guitarist Alex J. Hall does all the sampling. While the opener ...
