Listening to this album is always a strange experience for any Yes fan. Clearly Starcastle are following Yes. But did Yes then follow Starcastle? Probably not...but released a year before Yes' Tormato, this album's thin synth sound and electric timbre seem to foretell Yes' fate, even as it mimics the polyrhythms and vocal phrasings of Yes from years gone by. Still, the album has its own charms, largely due to the tight unison work of the rhythm section: Stephen Tasster's cascading tom fills in "Fountains" and Gary Strater's supple bass behind the delicate opening of "Portraits" are both marvelous. Herb Schildt's synth sounds, on the other hand, haven't always aged well. Still, he leads the band into some rousing instrumentals in the latter halves of "True to the Light" and "Diamond Song." ~ Paul Collins

| Fountains Of Light Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) they were always upfront about what they were doing, they take the Yes sound and put their spin on it. It isnt't Anderson and crew, but it is a refreshing upbeat sound from the good old days Submitted by teuscheld (Jacksonville, Fl. USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Another rediscovered gem. A good group that probably didn't get the respect they deserved because they sounded too much like Yes. This was probably their best effort. Some of the material is weak in spots, but the cuts True to the Light, and Deep is the Light are progressive art rock classics that make this effort more than a worthwhile buy. Hmmm??? This is Interesting! Yeah when I first heard this I thought for sure it was Yes! I actually heard Deep is the Light on the radio and purchased this on vinyl before the debut album which upon purchasing that was equally surprised it was every bit as good or better. Now I seem to remember having Citadel on vinyl but I guess I wasn't too impressed with it at the time, I can't find it now! I believe I had one called Real to Reel or something like that also. That may have been there last before the tragic auto accident and the subsequent lost recordings that occurred. I had to get a Japanese import copy of this because it wasn't reissued in the US at the time. Submitted by mheinen3 (Oklahoma City, OK, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Very similar to Yes I like the free flowing energy that this album admits Submitted by alinten (Melbourne, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Underrated Gem Fountains Of Light, the follow-up to Starcastle's outstanding debut album picks up where the first leaves off. From soft acoustic guitar and otherworldly lyrics to dramatic soundscapes, lush keyboard treatments behind clean, sometimes breathtaking dual guitar jams makes this a complete sonic experience that holds its own against all of today's current prog rock sounds. The novice may confuse this CD with the more familiar sounds of Yes, but the two bands' sounds are worlds apart. Fountains of Light has a distinctive, American sound to it - "bright" is a good way to describe it. Terry Luttrell's vocals are the defining element that sets the Starcastle sound and this CD apart from its so-called contemporaries. A listen through the headphones will have you dreaming right along with the band. "Fountains" and "Diamond Song" are my favorites but all the tracks are extremely listenable and well crafted. FOL was a huge fave of mine when it was released in 1978. I am so thrilled to own a crackle-free copy on CD and that someone had sense enough to re-release it. It is long overdue. Fountains Of Light album
$6.35 It was widely assumed that when vocalist/songwriter Jon Anderson left Yes at the end of the '70s, the band was doomed. Most folks forgot that bassist/composer Chris Squire was the other founding member of the band, and he had as much to do with their sound as Anderson. It was surprising enough when the band decided ...

$15.15 "Craig Dobbins is not only a fine guitarist but is equally gifted as an arranger. As a fellow believer in the greatest story ever told- Craig says it well on his guitar."- Doyle DykesThe gentle grace of these simple, beautiful (mostly) solo guitar arrangements of American sacred music is underscored by Craig Dobbins' relaxed, thoughtful playing. He treats these venerable melodies with great respect, beginning some pieces like "O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing" with the unadorned melody before harmonizing it in creative but appropriate ways. His settings range from the counterpoint variations of "Come Thou Fount" to the lightly swinging, Chet Atkins—influenced version of "Glory to His Name," and all are played with superb tone, phrasing, and feel. This is meditative and inspirational music no matter what or who your personal "higher power" happens to be.—Ron Forbes-Roberts, Acoustic Guitar magazineCraig Dobbins' beautifully played and richly harmonized arrangements sound so perfect on the guitar, you wonder why every church doesn't retire its organist and hire a really good fingerpicker."-Jim Ohlschmidt, Acoustic Guitar, Fingerstyle Guitar, FretsCraig Dobbins knows fingerpickin’.He is the author of many books and recordings on fingerstyle guitar, including two volumes on the music of Jerry Reed, and one on the music of Chet Atkins. His books and book/CD sets have been published by Mel Bay Publications, Hal ...
