| | State Steet Swingers State Street Swingers 1936-37 CD State Steet Swingers Discography of CDs
The State Street Swingers were a primitive but swinging group formed in the mold of the more successful Harlem Hamfats in the mid-'30s. Their seven recording sessions (resulting in 14 performances) are all included on this interesting CD from the Austrian RST label. The group generally featured strong singers (including Washboard Sam, Mary Mack, and Big Bill Broonzy) and hard-driving rhythm sections, but primitive horn players. In addition to their good-time performances, there are four titles from Mary Mack with a trio, and seven from singer Leonard Scott (who is also on two of The State Street Swingers' cuts). This generally enjoyable set is for true collectors of 1930s jazz and blues. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel includes: Washboard Sam (vocals, washboard); Big Bill, Tampa Red (guitar); Herb Morand, Alfred Bell (trumpet); Arnett Nelson (clarinet); Black Bob (piano); John Lindsay (drums); Chicago Black Swans, Mary Mack, Leornard Scott.

| | Chris Thomas King It's A Cold Ass World: The Beginning CD (1986)
State Street Swingers 1936-37 album
$9.49 King's debut album was released in 1986 when he was still billed as Chris Thomas. It's quality modern blues that sounds cognizant of contemporary trends without being forced. Largely written by King, the songs are reasonably satisfying electric blues that admit some influences from modern blues-rock players, particularly Jimi Hendrix, as well as a bit of funk and rock in the rhythm. At the same time he ground out some down-home gutbucket boogie blues that would be at home in a Southern roadhouse, like "Soon This Morning" and "Take Yo Time," and Chuck Berry-type songwriting with "Mary Jane." The rhythm section can sound a little flat and under-recorded, but at least underproduction serves this sort of music better than overproduction does. The record was reissued on CD, billed to Chris Thomas King under the new title It's a Cold Ass World -- The Beginning, on Arhoolie in 2001, with new historical liner notes. ~ Richie Unterberger

State Street Swingers 1936-37 music CDs
$19.15 According to the back cover, this compilation is designed as "another dip into the melting pot of early-'70s black music -- a time where Latin, jazz, soul, and funk mixed together and would eventually beget disco." It's a fair description of the contents, which are a real quilt of obscure soul-funk from the late '60s to the late '70s, concentrating most heavily on the earlier years of that span. A quick scan of the track list reveals just two names that might be known to even the reasonably knowledgeable R&B enthusiast, and those two artists, Joe Houston and Preston Epps, are far more identified with 1950s sounds than these much later (and surprisingly worthwhile) efforts. Anyway, it's an impressive compilation, not just for the high quality and wide diversity ...
