Skillet Lickers, Vol. 1: 1926-1927
$13.35 The legendary Skillet Lickers from Georgia played music, performed skits, and fought with one another during the 1920s and 1930s. This makes them something like the prototypical popular band with artistic differences. The core of the band consisted of fiddler/banjo player Gid Tanner, fiddler Clayton McMichen, and guitarist Riley Puckett. Their first recordings in 1927 would eventually sell over a million copies, which was pretty darn impressive at the time. The second volume of The Skillet Lickers series features songs initially recorded between 1927 and 1928. On these recordings the band shines forth in all its rough-hewn glory, singing and fiddling its way through classics such as "Cumberland Gap" and "Cotton-Eye ...

Skillet Lickers, Vol. 1: 1926-1927
$13.25 When it comes to music and musicians, certain things are timeless. The Skillet Lickers sold millions of records, fought with one other, and broke up, as thousands of other bands have done. They also -- two and a half years after breaking up -- decided to return to the studio and record again. This was back in the '20s ...

Skillet Lickers, Vol. 1: 1926-1927
$12.95 The Rip Chords' debut album features equal smatterings of the original group ("Gone," "Here I Stand," "She Still Thinks I Still Care," "Ding Dong") featuring Phil Stewart's soaring Four Seasons-inspired falsetto and the more Beach Boys-oriented sound of Bruce Johnston and Terry Melcher (nice covers of "409," "Drag City," "Little ...

| | Michelle Conte Lucky Me! CD (2003)
Skillet Lickers, Vol. 1: 1926-1927
$12.89 Michelle Conte, who makes her recording debut on Lucky Me!, has a pleasant voice and swings lightly. Unfortunately she does little else. She tends to sing the first chorus of each song straight, and after some short solos, she returns to sing the last chorus in a similar manner. Another problem with this unadventurous ...
| | B Down L.A. Rap Junkie CD (1998)
Skillet Lickers, Vol. 1: 1926-1927
$25.35 B. Down's debut album, The L.A. Rap Junkie, introduces the L.A.-based rapper and his impressive ambitions. Don't let the "junkie" reference in the album title mislead you; B. Down isn't a gangsta rapper and doesn't rap about drugs, sex, and violence, 'though those topics do occasionally creep into his rhymes. Instead, B. Down presents a positive view of the streets and values hard work and sincerity over crime and decadence. His talent is very evident here, though he's still a year or two away from blossoming. His second full-length, Rap Tactics, shows impressive improvement. ~ ...
